What's the real scoop?

I don't like what I'm reading about this BC company in the Watchdog. But they have some plants that I really want to try.

I don't recognize the names of any of the members in there. Has anybody had experience with Fraser Thimble Farms?

I think I mean Fraser's Thimble Farm. This message was edited Feb 7, 2005 7:57 PM

I haven't heard of them before.

I've bought plants off them for years. They are located on Saltspring Island. They have an amazing selection but it's best if you go there and pick out your plants. I've had some duds from him but usually they're good plants. I go every Spring. I'll be on Saltspring the weekend after the RU for a painting workshop. I haven't read the comments on the watchdog. I will now and comment later. I just read the watchdog comments. Saltspring Island does have a sub tropical climate. If you're in a really cold zone, maybe the plants won't thrive as well since they're not adjusted to cold temps. We've bought cypripidiums off him a few times and they've died. The bletillas did great, the ferns, the tree fern is fine but we winter protect it. He has an amazing selection of rare plants. Two brothers own the nursery, one brother also works on the ferry. They've always been really nice to me. Hope this helps.

Well maybe. I should see sense, but then they carry some Corydalis that I don't know where else to get. If I could find seed, they'd probably do better here.

ho ho ho, didn't get to this thread in the beginning. Salt Spring = Parkes Iris, (TDF), Cusheon /AND Thimble Farm. They have the best -also the most costly- things you could ever want. Even a Nepalense that lasted quite a few years in Brandon MB. Salt Spring has the BEST book store (Sabines in Ganges) - a great Saturday market with the bet breads & baking/plants/you name it. Tons of other great nurseries too. And don't forget the cheeses - David Wood .

Salt Spring is a really neat place. My aunt & uncle lived on a farm there in the 70s, and I have fond memories of collecting eggs, milking cows, etc. The island has changed a lot since then, more commercial now I think - but still a lot of neat stuff & places. I didn't know about Sabines....love a good bookstore!

I hear you Ginny! DSO and I were supposed to go skiing today (Tuesdays are 2-for-1 at Mont Ste-Marie), but had to cancel because of rain. It's so grey, slushy and messy here now...bleah. What I wouldn't give for a crisp, sunny prairie winter day.

Not only on the Prairies is it Bright and Sunny. We have one here in the Southern Interior as well. A little nippy this morning (-4) which, of course is what comes with the blue skies, but great for all my seedlings I have planted. The sun for the past cpuple days has them all germinating like crazy.
