do blueberries nedd cross pollination?

Cookeville, TN(Zone 7a)

do I need two blueberry plants so they bear fruit or does one self polinate? very new to planting blueberries so I could use all the help you have, thanks

Yes I think most if not all blueberries need another plant for pollenization. I have four now, all different. They are covered with pvc frame covered with bird netting. Otherwise i wouldn't get a berry. Donna

weasel33,

Some plants are self-pollinating (such as Elliot), but it is highly recommended that you plant at least two varieties that ripen close to the same time.

What is the best way to situate them for pollination purposes? I'm getting several varieties of blueberries & some cherries (I know, really slim chance of cherries in my area) and pawpaw all of which required other varieties for pollination. I don't know how close together they need to be planted, if wind is a factor or if its bees/birds (we have plenty of both at least around here).

Within a few feet, hundred yards, ect?

tinawind,

6 - 8 ft apart, rows 12 ft apart is what is recommended. As I understand it, in your area, rabbiteye blueberries will do much better than the Northen high bush. Maybe Farmerdill will weight in here, he's more knowlegable about blueberries than I. ☺

Red is on the money. Rabbit eyes or southern high bush are needed in most of Georgia. They are shrub type plants so they do well planted like a hedge about 6 feet apart. Also a lot easier to mulch them which I have found necessary in Georgia. they have very shallow root systems.

I also planted cherries last fall. I know I am pushing it but I am with Tinawind worth the effort for a few cherries, at least I think so my first year.

Thanks!

And yes, I am getting rabbiteye blueberries, and though I haven't yet tested the area I'm putting them in I think the soil should be reasonably acid (near all the pine trees & azaleas...all the landscaping plants down here seem to be heavily mulched with pine needles).

I bought 3 Jersey blueberries bushes from Lowes but they had rabbit-eye there two in the same box. I guess that's why. Silly me, I thought they were actually offering a variety. Well, when I go back today to buy more sandbags I guess I'll have to buy 2 rabbiteyes as well.
