Problems getting into Chat.. Help please!!!

When I try to get into chat all I get is a little box with a RED X in it!

I have Windows XP professional and it has been suggested that the reason I can't get into chat is because Chat needs Java to work.

I tried to lookup Free Java download but there are so many I don't know which one to use. Point me in the right direction PLEASE!!!!!!
