Wondering if anyone has started a pinapple from the pinapple top
I have one sitting on my cupboard and would like any hints on how to
make a house plant from it..
thanks
Pineapple
Morning dill,
Let the top dry out for about 3 days-a week. Then, in a very lose rocky soil, bury the part you have cut off. If you twisted the top off the pine, simply snuggle the bottom of it into the lose soil...it doesn't need to be "buried". Remember, pineapples are bromiliads. I have seen them grow and produce stuck in rock walls! Water from the top, into the bracts. Fertilize by putting fert in the lower bracts. As long as there is water puddled in the crown bracts you are OK. Growing it should take a balanced fert like triple 14, or triple 8...when the pine starts to form, low nitrogen. Don't let it be pollinated when it blooms or you will NOT get an edible pineapple.
Hope this helps.
AlohaHoya, would you use something like orchid medium? How long before it fruits? Will it grow in a pot? How do you not let it be pollinated, put a cloth on top? Do you ever get tired of so many questions?
AlohaHoya
Thanks for the great info.
You might do a search on this. Recently, I posted a very long post with advice on this as well as a number of web site links to instructions. I have two plants I've started from the tops I got in the grocery store.
It's easy! Have fun!
HI...I would use even more rocks ... the pineapple does become topheavy.
I think only hummingbirds pollinate the pine...just keep those away. That's why hummers are verboten in Hawaii...
