Advice on seed pods

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

I opened my second seed pod this A:M, a 5 inch Pink Beauty that has been on the plant since August. It had finally begun to shrivel, sink in.and soften. It opened easily, and all the seeds were seperate and fell right out. They were the size of big, brown raisins.
I had opened a 2 inch Pink Beauty pod several weeks ago, and it was pulpy with white seeds that dried to brown in several days, but are 1/3 the size.
Please explain the difference in the seeds - does the difference occur because of the pod size, the daddy, or maybe immaturity?
Does Pink Beauty produce mostly very large seeds?

I am trying to remember my PB seeds. I know my Rosamond seeds sound just like yours. They are loose in the pod and big and dark. Just lovely seeds.

What did the 2 inch pod look like? Was it ripe? Sometimes they rot, and you think they are ripe but they are not. I had one do this just recently. It rotted from all the rain and the seeds inside were immature. I notice late pods tend to be smaller. However white seeds could mean and usually mean they are immature. In this case you should plant them right up to see if you can get some germination.

many people have planted the white immature seeds and had some germinate
But they have to be planted right away and not dried

It could be the smaller seeds just did not form correctly
perhaps the pollination was not enough

also some have said they have gotten pods of totally infertile seeds on some plants

but a pod that is only 2 inches sounds just immature

You know, Kell, Rosamond could be the Daddy - it was tall like the PB, and six feet away. Would "he" influence the size of the pod or seeds?
I think the small pod was just immature now that you have told me about size. It was beginning to soften and shrivel. I did not plant the seeds at the time -- I have about 12 left from it, all dried. (Would you try planting them now?)

Polly, pod and seed size is influenced from the mother plant and her genes.

Sure, plant them up. The worse that could happen is nothing grows! Pink Beauty and Rosamond are sisters and very similar. So if they are the parents, the babies will look a lot like the parents I would think.

Most people, me included, can't tell the diference beween PB and Rosamond. I think Rosamond flowers are bigger. I have 2 seedlings from Susie that were a cross between the 2 and they all look a lot alike. 1of these 2 crosses, that I call by the nickname of Pinkmond, seems to be a little darker for me than the parents.

Thanks for the input -- learned a lot!
Think I'll be lazy with the small pod seeds, and just wrap in paper towels and into a baggie to start. They'll have to show me their stuff.

kell...glad to know where the name Pinkmond came from! Some of your seeds I am growing are from a cross with Pinkmond!!!

It was probably a NO-NO to hybridize with it, Margie. I may get a scolding on here. But I had some pollen and a brush and I was temporarily insane. Her pods are incredible. Soft, fuzzy and beautifully feminine in shape. I will probably never release her unless Susie tells me too. I sent her a piece last year to see if it was even darker for her since I can have color issues in my cool climate. I forgot to ask her how it did.

You are only supposed to release if the brug is significantly different from the other brugs already released. However, I will probably continue to grow Pinkmond (Pink from Pink Beauty and Mond from Rosamond). Rosamond is one of my favorites and her daughter is a similar beauty. Plus I have it growing at my friends, so I have no space constrictions!

Kell...a question...if you just stated " Pod parent X (PBXR Sdlg)" wouldn't that be the same and wouldn't that be OK to do??
Mums the word...do you want me to remove my post?

LOL. NO. I am a big girl and have been more than scolded on here. LOL LOL. I will take my naughty lashes. In the end, I try to follow all the rules but this is fun for me. I do it for fun. And if I do not get it all right, oh well what can I say but SORRY!

I know ABADS, the official brug site frowns on giving nicknames (like Pinkmond) to seedlings. They recommend and with good reason, just numbering them in some fashion. My problem is I would never remember numbers in a million years, so if I were to look at a label with numbers it would mean nothing to me. However short names that remind me of the flower really sticks in my porous memory.

I could be way wrong, but I would think hybridzing with a no name on purpose, one that will never be released is a not done by the good hybidizers like Monika. I will have to ask her. Maybe it is OK. I just know I felt guilty the minute I did it. Like it was wrong.

Would like to share my BIG Pink Beauty seeds with 3 people; I have planted all I can use. Let me know by email with a promise to look after them with TLC.
The ones from the small pod that I wrapped in wet paper towels have swollen to the size of the ones from the large pod, and have a minute little root showing. When to plant??
I planted the large seeds in Jiffy peat pellets -- certainly is easy, and I'll cover them with the lid that came with the tray set of 72. HAs anyone used this method?
