STILL looking for Thyme, Rosemary & Mexican Oregano!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

hello! anybody! I can buy the Thyme & possibly the Rosemary here, but I can't find the Mexican Oregano. I am already growing Greek Oregano from a friend here that sent it, and it is doing very well. :-)

There are 2 kinds of 'Mexican Oregano' listed here at Dave's; which one is it that you are looking for exactly?

Mexican Oregano, Puerto Rican Oregano (Lippia graveolens)

Mexican Oregano, Rosemary Mint (Poliomintha longiflora)

Well now I'm stumped! I think it is most likely the first one you listed, Puerto Rican - but not sure. I want to grow the stuff they sell at the store as Mexican Oregano that you use when you make Mexican foods, i.e. chili, enchiladas, tamales, etc.....

I'm pretty sure you're looking for Poliomintha bustamanta. It's a shrubby plant that can get 2-3 feet tall. it's a tender perennial. DeBaggio lists it as root hardy to zone 8. I had one at our townhouse, and it overwintered OK in a sheltered raised bed (zone 7a), but you'd probably be better off with it in a pot that you can move inside, which I think you said you were doing anyway in your original post. The taste was very similar to the dried "mexican oregnao" I get from Penzey's. As a bonus, it has very pretty lavender flowers that are nearly an inch long. Just as a note, since I'm checking the book right now, this herb has no GRAS status ("generally regarded as safe", which I think is a US FDA term).

Although the plant I had came from DeBaggio's greenhouse, I found no mention of how to propagate it in his books. But at least now you know which one you're looking for!
