Hello All,
I joined a few weeks ago and have been lurking. I am Laura, a wanna be gardener :) I am in South Texas. Before we moved here we lived in No. Cal and gardening there was a lot different than gardening here! I have been here 9 years and still haven't figured it out.

Welcome to Daves from Iowa. I'll bet there are some members close to you that can help you get started successfully. Just jump in and say "help" on the forum you are interested in getting help from. I know someone will help you. The Texas forum would be a good place to start. Anyway, enjoy you time in the garden.
Welcome to Dave's Garden from Houston Tx. This is a great place to learn and make friends, and even trade plants and seeds. Enjoy!

Welcome to Daves , I think you will find all you need here and more.
A warm DG welcome from Marin County, Ca, Laura! How north were you when you lived here? You'll have so much fun here at Dave's. I'm a wanna-be gardener, too.
See you around!

We lived in Novato. North of San Francisco. It was beautiful. I miss it!

Laura,
Welcome!. We lived in Southern Calif before moving here. Hate to tell you how many years ago, but it's a lot. ;-)
Yes Texas is very different from gardening in Calif. Maybe that is why they made a special forum just for us "Texas Gardening"
I am also new to DG, had to have a friend twist my arm to join. Really just needed the kick in the behind to make me do it.
Oh I just noticed the post above this is from you also. My twin daughter's were born in Novato, CA. World keeps getting smaller all the time.
If I can help you in any way, just ask. I am not really computer savvy, but know a fair amount about plants.

4xthefun Welcome to Dave's. You will like it here and learn alot about being a gardener. Lots of gardening questions and answers can be found here too. I have been to your area before and had the opportunity to go to Aransas National Wildlife Refugee a few times. I saw endangered whooping cranes and lots of wildlife there.
Welcome from a former Orange County'n (26 years). I understand the frustration of learning to garden in a different zone. Don't give up! You will find wonderful things about your zone you didn't have in CA.
