Seed envelopes

I have heard that glassine envelopes are good for brug seeds. Any info on that. cinnabor

I've started using them with the 2004 seeds. For now...everything I have bagged up looks good. While its probably too soon for a verdict on these ... I'm sure there is someone who has more experience using glassine. Wish I could tell you more :(

I don't care for the glassine envelopes I bought last year. I have to look for some tape everytime I need to seal one up.

That is my only problem too Ada. The plastic zips work well for me, but since Renee sent me some of the glassine, I'll use them up. Another thing, if you don't use all the seeds from one, you have to find tape to tape it shut if the envelope is still useable after opening. I think they are great for those tiny seeds that stick to the inside of the plastic baggies. Those seeds roll right out of the glassine bags.

Glassine envelopes are actually the best for storing seeds or probably anything made of paper. Plastic is the worse . . even though I have some in the zip plastic small bags now. If kept in plastic very long, holes need to be punched in it and I use a large safety pin for that. There is a drafting tape that people use that do drafting that sticks and unsticks and that is ideal for the glassine or little brown envelopes.

Thanks Frannie. I'll have to check on getting some of that. Scotch tape sure doesn't work. I also use a pin to puncture holes in my bags of brug seeds for storage, but they don't store very long around here. They get planted.

I just use the cheapest masking tape and dog-ear one end and then apply the remaining part to the glassine bag,,,it comes off and can be reapplied nicely.
I have some pollen stored in a few of these bags too. After harvesting the anthers last fall, I placed them directly inside pre-labeled bags...leaving the end unclosed until they were nice and dry. I folded and creased the bag shut and placed the whole thing in the fridge. So far-so good. The pollen remains dry and fluffy . Easy too...Sort of a one-step process with no waste. I'll have to test the viability once I have some flowers to work with .

I thought I would try this. Because I was sent what was suppose to be a special seed prize...when I went to peel them they were all empty and the condition of the seeds were not that good...they had been kept in plastic. I had been looking around and read about these and keeping the seeds fresh for as long as possible. Also I don't know if you have seen this or not...plastic cups used for seedlings one smaller than the other put on top will click in place forming a small seed dome. I use solo it really works and the moisture goes back into the bottom cup because the top one fits inside. when you need the seedling to get more air I poke a few small holes in the top. This is so cool..and works cinnabor
