treesonline.com, what's the deal?

Lenapah, OK(Zone 6b)

their website was down for something and never came back, although dutch gardens does. are they related or does anyone know what is going on. treesonline.com looked like a wonderful source for fruit trees.

thanks yuska but that link takes me again to something called dutch gardens, i smell a rodent. i got burned thru mail order last year (autumn ridge is worthless, do not order from these scavengers and ripp offs) and that is one reason i joined this great site. we must attempt to protect ourselves from the many thieves that seem to be a part of mail order.

Garden Watchdog has only 7 reviews, but they are all very postitive. Check it out.

so true critter, but i am trying to find out where that site has evaporated to. it sure wasn't dutch gardens. daves garden is investigating and i hope the people who have sent their money will get taken care of. i was going to spend with them before their site vanished.

At this point, the site is no longer being redirected to Dutch Gardens (which is owned by Gardeners' Supply, by the way.) But there is stil not much of a website there. I've emailed the owners, but have not received a reply.

They are a bona fide company and they paid to participate in PlantScout. Like y'all, I'm a bit worried about them - if anyone has any information on what's going on with them, please let us know.

I am also concerned about treesdirectonline. I looked at their site last summer and was very impressed with their prices and positive comments. I emailed them to ask about what kind of peach tree would be best to grow in a zone 4 and was amazed at the prompt, very detailed reply. I decided to order trees and hopefully raspberries and blueberries from them this spring. When I saw that their site was down I emailed them and got a quick reply that they would be up and going the first part of February. Maybe their calendar is off!!!!! All emails since then have gone unanswered. I found the raspberries I wanted at Nourse Farms but I was sure they would be less expensive at treesdirectonline. WELL, since I was goofing around waiting for them, Nourse Farms has sold out of the raspberries I wanted. They, however, have put me on a waiting list in case they have extra. I am disappointed to say the least.

disapointed maybe, but if you had sent treesdirectonline a couple of hundred dollars in the fall of 04 for spring of 05 shipping like i believe many folks have already done, then you might feel a heavier sting if the merchandise is not delivered. the watchdog is one of the many reasons that 'dave's' is such a beneficial site.
it's becoming my opinion that we must search out nurseries that we can travel to and know what we are getting. i know that can be troublesome but these online nurseries are turning criminal in their intent. and i'm taking it anymore.

redapple, thank you for the kind words about the Watchdog - it's one of the features I help take care of it here, and it's been a lot of fun (and hard work) to watch it succeed. But I'd have to say I'm not sure I agree with you on one point, though:

Quoting:

While I wholeheartedly endorse buying from locally-owned businesses whenever possible, I think the mailorder industry is becoming more legitimate, not less. Pre-internet, when you received catalogs in the mail your only exposure to the company was to call or mail in your order and you had no way of knowing whether they were on the up-and-up or not. A first-time order was a leap of faith, unless your neighbor or a family member could personally recommend them.

The internet has made it possible for people to share their personal "word of mouth" experience with the entire world. The Plants By Mail FAQ was a true pioneer in fostering this exchange of information; when we launched the Watchdog we took that idea as a springboard with better technology (a cross-referenced database) and a much wider range of gardening sources for people to provide feedback for.

As a result of the internet, the fly-by-night vendors are feeling the pressure. Why do I say that? Because they try various means to deflect the spotlight off themselves - they threaten to sue us, they manufacture glowing comments about themselves, and sometimes they change names. In turn, we stand firm and explain to them why we aren't liable for comments written by others, we expose their manufactured comments for what they are, and we show who-owns whom. Eventually the worst of them simply close down.

I'm always surprised by how many people read the ads in their Sunday newspaper supplements and then march their fingers over to the Watchdog to discover the amazing tomato trees aren't so amazing after all - we get a lot of "thank-yous" from those folks ;o)

I love Garden Watchdog. It is my favorite site. My husband can't believe how much time I spend browsing. I think it helps a lot to be able to read the opinions of other experienced people. I just can't understand something, though. Why on earth do people keep ordering from anyone associated with Gardens Alive? There are several others that are no better.

garden watchdog is a beacon of help and information. thanks terry for your work, most excellent. many of us simply cannot travel to procure what we can order from a catalog. watchdog is a wonderful tool against the greedy, unscrupulous people who use and abuse their mailorder customers. however, human nature being what it is, the incidence of burning mailorder customers is, i believe, higher than ever. so keep on keeping on, watchdog, i'm a paid subscriber and think it's worth every nickel.
by the way terry, i think a section which would list those nurseries which promote drive in sales would be helpful.

FYI - TreesDirectOnline sent us an update today - they've modified their URL to http://www.treesdirect.us/

I've updated their Watchdog entry with the new URL and the new email address. Hopefully this bodes well for their future ;o)
