Gardener's Supply grow box

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

Here is a photo of the GS self-watering grow box I ordered. I filled one of them with GS soil-lesscontainer mix and some questionable leftover spring bulbs as a trial run. They are out on my south facing deck which gets very warm whenever the sun is out. (Which is not today, since we had freezing rain overnight but thankfully has turned to just plain old rain for most of today. Temp 38.) I don't have any room in the house for the boxes right now.

roseone33 - how does this work better than just having a big tub filled with soilless mixture. i just bought, but haven't used two earthboxes from their web site. they have some kind of a screen and a spout for adding water and a place to put stakes if you are using them for tomatoes or something like that. how much were the boxes you have. thanks. frank

Hello Frank, Mine are not brand name Earth Boxes but self-watering planters from Gardener's Supply Co in Vermont. I bought two for $38.each. If you click on the photo, you may be able to see the separate second piece of plastic that has holes and fits down into the water recepticle. These have no sceen or spout. I will cover the hole used to fill the botton section with a duct tape flap when it gets warm enough for mosquitos to breed. I can't tell you how this is any better than a big tub filled with soiless mixture, it may not be. When there was a lot of discussion in what I recall to be the tomato forum, a lot of folks were singing the praises of the earth box and it seemed like a good thing to try. I have been wanting to try to grow a few more things on my very hot deck and not deal with so many weeds and the hike out to the garden when it's really hot and all I want is a tomato for lunch. Long story... it's an experiment and I hope it's worthwhile. I can always use the planters for something.

roseone33 - take a look at earthbox.com on the internet. as i said i just bought two and the price was the same as yours and it comes with everything you need except the soilless soil. you actually put fertilizer down once and thats it for the season. it comes with a plastic cover and according to many people here at daves garden it works like a charm.

Thanks Frank, I'll do that. I will probably cover my soil with plastic, red in the case of tomatoes.
