Welcome to DG, hypatia! What kinds of plants do you like to grow? There's something for everyone here! If you haven't seen it already, here's the latest planning thread for our first-ever Canadian Round-Up in Victoria, 1-5 April - it would be great if you could make it.

Hypatia was a cool dude/dudette then, echoes. Welcome to the forum from Alberta. What is your particular garden passion?

Musquodoboit Harbour, NS(Zone 6b)

I love gardeners!!! What a friendly crew.

I am a novice gardener. But I have 3 acres to work with on the edge of Musquodoboit Harbour. I have been doing mostly hardscaping. Building new beds, extending a porch, adding a pergola and widening an existing perrenial border on the approach to the house. I love building rock walls and have one in progress.

The past three years have been spent partially fighting japanese knotweed in an abadoned garden plot between house and outbuilding. Almost have it beat.

I struggle with design. My space is large and it seems to take a lot of planting to create an impact and then to have that impact spread over the growing season is a challenge. Most of my photos are h/c so need to scan them to post. I just got a new digital so I could post amazing photos of snow! But I'm sure you all have seen enough of that.

I must confess that my interest is in mediterranean gardens. I know, I know, I'm only in a 6b zone. Last summer I extended my perrenial border with lavenders and small heathers, put in a rose of sharon and 3 acanthus hungaricus and a wisteria for the pergola. This spring I'd like to focus more on shrubs and trees.

I'm going cross country skying today so will take the camera and see if I can get a good shot of the harbour to post.

So, echoes, you've heard of hypatia. There is so much to know, don't you think?

Your garden sounds wonderful....... to think when you take a break from gardening you have a view of the ocean! Looking very forward to seeing your summer pics!!

Please take many pictures of your harbour and we'd even love to see your snow! ;) Do you have a lighthouse nearby???

Hypatia, have you looked here to confirm your hardiness zone? I think you're a 5b, not 6b.

Happy Sunday!

Hi Ceedub, I checked the link out and you are correct. This map has us placed as 5b. I've been doing most of my ordering through Vesey's in PEI and they have us categorized as a 6b. I've been doing all my planning and purchasing around the 6 b zone for the past 5 years and it hasn't failed me yet. Maybe that we are not on open ocean, but rather a sheltered harbour with a southern exposure and a good northwind break. It's fun to see what you can get away with. Microclimates can help you push your boundaries.
Hava a good one!

Vesey's probably doesn't know the system was revamped in 2000. Seems as if you're right about the microclimate though, I'd go with the 6b if I were you, after all, its working!

My plants and shrubs don't know they revamped the system either.
