Firewall & Virus Protection expired....now I have to pay?

My subscription to firewall/virus protection expired and I keep getting pop up boxes to renew. They want me to pay for this. Do I live in a dream world thinking this was free forever when I bought my computer? I thought it was installed and there permanently. Please explain?!
