Hi, I am an independent consultant for a new direct sales company called The Happy Gardener out of Ashland, VA. We deal exclusively with items that pertain to gardening - decorative containers, fertilizers, tools, etc. Each month I am responsible for writing an article for our newsletter under the name of Dear Flora (which was my late grandmother's name and aptly so!). This month I am writing about caring for your amaryllis after it blooms and carrying it over to the next year. If you have any information or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. This is a novel topic for me so I can definitely use the help. Thanks
Amaryllis care
DearFlora,
Hello, pleasure to meet you, I'm Hugs :) I believe you may want to post your thread in a different forum. General Discussion or Parking Lot would most likely do. Stay at Home Moms Forum is a much less visited forum, and you likely would not receive the response you're after. LOL :) Best wishes to you! :)
P.S. Also, if you are new to Dave's Garden and here mostly for business purposes, you may want to read the AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) at the bottom of this page. Dave has placed a few restrictions on advertising and the like. Take care!
Hugs :)
Dear Hugs,
Thanks for the info. I was trying to post under Amaryllis care but didn't know exactly what I was doing. I joined the site primarily as a way to gain gardening info but thanks for the heads up on the advertising.
Dear Flora
Like most bulbs, amaryllis flowers for the following year form within the bulb after the current flowering period has finished. In so many of the gift packs sold before the holidays, the potting medium is peat or coir, which will hold moisture for the sleeping flower within to use, but does not provide any nutrients to develop a blossom for the next season. As soon as the holiday blossoms are finished, I transfer the bulb to a larger pot with compost added, so that the regrowth process can have nutrients to draw on. The repotted bulb can be placed in an out of the place but should not be allowed to dry out completely until the stalk and leaves have completely withered and are dry.
Dear Flora,
you may want to use the forum 'search' box on the upper right of this page--just type in 'amaryllis' and press 'enter' on your keyboard--lots of Plant Files pictures pages will come up, but there are also many posts covering 'post bloom' care just as you are asking about.
Here's a start for you--- http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/186093/
Amaryllis are also covered in detail right now on the 'Bulbs' forum on a couple of threads and if you want more clarification of your topic/question that would be a good spot to post it. Also try 'houseplant' forum.
Also, one more thing! If you google "Clemson University" and amaryllis--the best free info on the net on amaryllis will come up--look for a little brochure in PDF format...
Good luck with your gardening column. Sounds like a fun project!
