Persian Shield or another for windy spot?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I have a 24" pot at the corner of my fairly shady front walk on the north side of the house. I put dahlias there last year, thinking they would enjoy the morning sun (it gets sun until maybe noon in summer, but the northern exposure isn't very bright). Unfortunately, I didn't take into account that this is also the windy side of the house when summer storms come through, and the dahlias just got battered. So now I'm thinking maybe Persian shield in the center of the pot and trailing coleus around the edges. I know the coleus does well at this location, but can anybody tell me if the Persian Shield need a more sheltered spot? I'm not worried about the sun (I could move the pot closer to the house if it needed more shade), just about the wind.

Or, if anybody has another suggestion for another fairly tall plant that would like part to mostly shade and wouldn't mind occasional wind.....

Thanks!

Hi,
I'm in FL and I have mine in partial shade. It is getting very leggy. I, myself would want more of a compact plant for a planter. I have cut this back once and it's about due again. But it is beautiful Nancy Lee

Thanks! It's a big planter, so I'm not so much worried about compact. I can fill in around the bottom. I thought this one would be striking, but I didn't want another plant that would be looking pathetic like the dahlias after a couple of summer storms...
