How deep do I plant them? Crinum?

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Assuming that my mystery plants are crinum, how deep do I plant the long trunks? I remember reading some where that they need to be planted very deep but I must not have planted it at the right depth b/c my plant is raving at me.

And, if any one can spare me some advice on doctoring my plants, growing them and maybe even a specimen ID, I would REALLY appreciate it!

I plant my crinums with the bulbs barely covered and the long neck completely above ground. They bloom off and on all summer.
Those are really tall aren't they? In TN, I used to dig some of my crinums because I wasn't sure how hardy they were. I would just let them go dormant and store the bulb dry. Down here, they don't go dormant, and one variety is flowering right now.

Same here - the Crinums stay in the ground and we plant them like Calla does.

Are yours staying in pots or will you plant them out?

In pots b/c I'm afraid to disturb the roots. I read that that's a very bad thing to do where crinums are concerned b/c they might not flower for a year.

Calalily, Yes. These are pretty tall. Makes me wonder what they'll look like once they get their act together.

Are you guys growing yours in full sun?

I have some in the sun, some in the shade. Some of mine bloomed the first year in the ground after traveling all the way from Florida...Wierd.

Mine too Carol. Even the ones I dug up every year bloomed. I think the trick to moving them is to wait till they are resting before disturbing.
Now to figure out how to move the Lily of the Nile and get it to bloom!

Do you think the pot boundedness would force blooming?

I had one in a pot that once it got "stuck" it did not bloom. I would give those roots more room!!!

You would be sursrised how deep they grow. The bulbs you have now are nothing compared to how big and deep they will go. You need a pot probably twice that deep. I love my crinums.

These two guys now officially have a spot reserved in my tropical garden. Now all I have to do is make one....

How many gardens am I making this year, oh yes....
A bog garden
A whole new butterfly garden
A large pond with surrounding plantings
A rock garden
A rose garden
Multiple alpine gardens.... then they're all the ones I haven't though up yet!

I'm going to be sooooo busy!
