What breed is best?

I have an 11-year-old Border Collie. He has been with me since he was 5 weeks old. I had a 13-year-old Golden Retriever that just recently passed away. Now my border collie, Zackary, is so lonesome. We got a cat that he really liked but he was driving our rommmate crazy. So now Zack has no one. He has never been alone before. He always had Joshua to keep him company. I want to get a new dog for Zack to have around with him, but I'm not sure what breed to get. My DH does not want another big dog, so I want something smaller. Does anyone have any ideas on what breed I should get for him. Oh, he does not mind other dogs around him, so that will not be a problem. Any ideas that you have would be greatly appreciated.
