I was so very frustrated a few months ago in my attempt to find bubble envelopes & little zip lock bags. Now that I've located these things I wanted all the other people new to the Seed Trading Forum to have this information.
- Padded/Bubble envelopes - Sam's Club has 25 in a box for $4+ change
- Tiny Zip Lock Baggies - Wal-Mart has these in the Crafts Department, back by Material, 100 2"x3" bags for $.97
Windy - I got my plastic bags by the case at Veripak online. They have all sorts of packing supplies. I am a lazy shopper! LOL www.veripak.com
- Plant markers - popsickle sticks in Craft Dept at Wal-Mart also. Use a Permanent marker to write out plant name, date planted and from whom. I'll go find my receipt and post the # and price.
gingerlily - I cut up miniblinds for plant markers. You can buy a used one at a yard sale or thrift shop for a dollar usually. You can cut hundreds out of one blind depending on the size you cut. That way too, I cut bigger ones for larger pots if I want to and don't have to strain my old eyes as much.
gingerlily - You might find that a pencil works better than a marker on these over the long time. I like to use a carpenter's pencil or a kindergarten pencil cause they have bigger leads in them.
The best of Seed Trading and SASBE for you in 2005.

Supplies - where to find them
Thanks for the tips....I have a Sam's membership but never thought of looking there.
Susan
Thanks Judy!!
Great info Judy thanks!
How many and how much are the tiny zip lock baggies? I've always wondered.
that is cheap for Bubble envies, as Wall-Mart charges 69 cents for one
We don't have a Sams Club here - I've never even heard of it.
Karrie it is the MASTER WALL-MART LOL we have one 60 miles away
guess they haven't made their way out West yet (here anyways).
Wal-Mart - 100 2"x3" bags for $.97
Karrie, you can find them at Hobby Lobby if you have that. And probably at Marshall's. Try Target or any good size craft store. They are very inexpensive. I don't remember the price specifically, but I think I only paid a couple of dollars for 50 or more (probably a 100) at Hobby Lobby.
I am not a fan of Wal-Mart - the parking is terrible, and I hate the crowds. BUT......... 100 for less than a dollar? I'm there!
We don't have a Hobby Lobby or a Marshalls either. We do have a Target. What department do you find them in at Target? Target is a nice store that I prefer shopping at.
I'm not sure target has them, just a suggestion to look there. Not 100 for less than a dollar , but 50 or more (maybe a 100) for a couple of dollars (2-3).
Karrie20x - if you have a 24 hr Wal-Mart, go early, early in the morning and you should not experience that problem. I'm up and going at 4 so a 5 AM run to Wal-Mart and basically only the stockers and I are there. lol lol

gingerlily - Thank you so much for your positive, $ saving input!!!
I've moved your suggestion to the top posting.

I use mini blinds for plant markers also. I have one in the garage now just waiting until spring. When I finally get them all chopped off I put them in the trash heap. The garbage men must wonder what sort of wild time we have in our house to have this happen! LOL

WOW I have never seen them for that price in our Wall-Mart, I paid $2 for 25 on ebay
kareoke - maybe Wal-Mart has started stocking a new brand. Have you checked lately. I just bought these Thursday
Our Super Wall-Mart is a mess, they are stocking so much of the plastic containers, they are everywhere, they did tell me they would be puting back the garden supplies next week.
kareoke - was the last posting in regard to the seed baggies??? If so, they are stocked in the Crafts Dept/section back next to the Material/Sewing Machine Dept/section.
Thank you for that info! I have been looking for those tiny ziplocs for ages.

I know the feeling!! I will admit several people here at DG told me Wal-Mart but none of the Wal-Mart employees (5-6) I asked knew what I was talking about. I concluded there was no market for them in our area... lol lol lol Now if someone had just said CRAFTS DEPT the light would have come on for me.
Old mini-blinds are great for markers - and why buy new ones for THAT! Go to Goodwill or another 2nd hand store if you are just going to cut them up anyways.
4:00 or 5:00 in the morning? Ummmmmmmm - NOT ME! :-)
Costco has those big janitorial clear plastic bags in a box of 200 (I think) but I don't remember how much they cost.
I cut these up and send plants wrapped in them. Or use on entire plants to grow in a greenhouse condition.
I'm cheap when it comes to plant markers. I cut up rinsed out milk jugs. They take magic marker ink real well and stand up to heat and weather. Best of all it's recycling the plastic that I already paid for.
When living in Arizona and Texas, I frequented Sam's and Wal*Mart a lot, 'cause I could always find what I needed/wanted in one stop, and those 24-hour Super Wal*Marts were a blessing more than once! :)
Thanks for all the tips, gang!
Donna

I'm going to bump this thread one more time, because I can remember how frustrated I got trying to find these supplies.
Happy Seed Trading.
Judy
For Mailers, i find it the cheapest, to buy a pack of 25, 6x9 yellow envelopes, and a roll of bubble wrap.. Each run in about 2 dollars a piece from Target. Just cut the bubble wrap to fit in the envelope and your good to go.
