New Jersey frost bites

Waxhaw (Charlotte), NC(Zone 7b)

After a few weeks of mild (50-60's) weather, the temperature is today plummeting from high of 59 F to low of 10 F tonight.

Driving to work this morning, the temperature gauge fell from 59 F to 37 F in a matter of 1 HR 37 MINS (my commute is usually 45-60 minutes, but drivers in NJ have a fear for rain and feel they have to slow down to 20 MPH in passing lane on the highway as soon as the windshield gets wet. Don't get me started about snow.. that makes people abaondon their cars in the middle lane on 3 lane highways)

Driving to work - after I managed to calm myself down - the only thing I could think of was my darling roses in containers, exposed hydrangea stems, and lily bulblets in small pots that I - against better knowledge - had left outside instead of hauling them in the garage for the winter. When daytime temperatures break 60 F it is hard to justify to yourself the labor of moving the stuff when you can watch the rose bowl parade on TV).

Anyway, having probably lost the next seasons hydrangea blooms, the yellow roses, and all the lily bulblets I thought I might aswell join in as a member, and so I did.

This long introduction then simply a pre-lude to say: HI.. here I am latest (paid) member of daves garden.

(and hint. guys... I need cuttings this spring.. of hydrangeas.. hint! hint!)

Kenneth

Welcome Kenneth. I hope your hydrangea will be okay. I have a couple planted in the ground, but they are probably a different kind. I'm sure hoping they will survive the winter and we are really cold. Right at this minute, it is only one degree above zero. Supposed to be really cold tonight. Anyway, I'm happy to meet you and hope to see you soon in some of the forums.

HI Kenneth and welcome. I am sure that we can manage to help you out with the hydrangeas when you are ready for them . I have a couple of them myself. I live in North Florida and being on the cusp of a zone, I get to grow a little of everything. I do grow roses and have among them, a pretty little yellow tea rose and a chicago peace rose that is huge! Growing roses can be a challenge here with the humidity.

Hi Kenneth, and welcome from the west coast. I saw the thread you started in the other forum, so came over here to see if you found the Welcome Mat.

We are a very sharing group of gardeners, and come spring, there will be lots of sharing of our gardens. I sure hope you enjoy your stay here.

Welcome Kenneth. Getting to work sounds like a real obstacle course! Hope your plants are ok. Outguessing the weather is a real challenge, but some plants are tougher than we think. I hope your plants are ok, hoping for the best.

Hi Kenneth,

Just found you here on the Welcome Mat. Your lilies may be OK. Am sure that they are now inside in garage. Some cold doesn't hurt them. I have bulblets from scales in my fridge at the mo. Will leave them in the cold for 6 weeks or so, before I bring them out into the warmth to (hopefully)start leafing out.
Cheers

Welcome to Dave's garden. New Jersey is the GARDEN state. I lived there for a year or so taking care of my Dad. dug up my suburban back yard rental, much to the dismay of my landlady. :-) Gotta garden, especially if you're in the garden state!
