Rose Cuttings

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

When is the time to inquire about rose cuttings? Any one want to plan a future trade?

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

When is the best time to take cuttings? Which roses do you have? I can email you a list of mine if you are interested.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Roses are the one of the few things I haven't dabbled in. I don't really have any or know when the best time is for cuttings.

I just planted a rosa rugosa (species, not cultivated) this fall, but that's it besides the weedy roses I'm trying to get rid of.

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Capt... I planted a Seven Sisters start last fall and I'll send you a start off it when it gets established and looks like it will make it. I got it from my brother who got the original start from my sister.

I'm pretty sure it is what they call a rambler, it was real leggy and not many blooms at my sister. My brother took home a start and put cow manure on it. He read that if you take the long "ramblers" and bend them down and tie them to the plant, it promotes more of a bush with more blooms. It worked for him. Here are a couple pictures of it.

Well, he sure did a good job with it! I would describe that as covered in blooms! And the blooms are so pretty too, so full and pink.

Thanks for the cuttings, I'd really appreciate them!

Kathy,

Whatever your brother did it sure worked. That is a lovely rose.

I have an "own root " climber, my only rose other than a Hansa Ragosa, and this rose is so weird but if someone can find out when is the best time to take cuttings I would be more than happy to give you one Michelle in trade for the Henna you gave me some time ago.

Oh!! Why is this rose weird? I have it planted in a large cedar tub. It didn't grow well at all. It had a bout with mites. Then along came the cold weather and I had to do something with it so I moved it into my basement . It hardly has any light and the room it is in doesn't get much heat so it is almost a constant 39 degrees.

This rose looks so good, except the leaves are a real deep blue green and it is blooming. It looks phony, like those silk flowers.

I can't remember the name but have asked my daughter and when she tells me I will edit this again.

Me and my sister roll our eyes at my brother because he can take something in our yard that isn't doing well, take it home and it 2 months, it looks like the pictures in the plant catalogs. ha He has easy access to cow manure.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Your rose sounds really interesting Jeanette. And gorgeous too with those blue green leaves and phony flowers. Are you sure it's not just a silk rose? Jk. When you find out, I'd love to know what it is.

CaptMicha,

I'm starting my cuttings now. They do best in the winter time here in Texas. I simply cut them about 6 inches long, remove all leaves, insert 2 inches in the soil right next to the mother plant and in the spring I uproot them and pot them up. You can probably do the same in your zone.

If you are interested I have named old roses that I could send you cuttings of for postage. I also have some climbers.

WOW, is that a real bird on the top of that bush? Very pretty, both the roses and the bird.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

It looks like a floribunda... doesn't it? I don't know much about roses but I hope I'm learning!

I've been looking for a rose that blooms that long! I think they have the same kind over at my college and I've always wondered what they were! I'm emailing you!

CaptMicha,

I forgot to mark this thread to watch. My phony rose is "Polka". An "own root" climber. Very pretty. Cripe, I might even be able to get a piece going now. Or would I send you a piece to start?

Did anyone ever say how you take a start? My mom used to cut off a piece and put in the ground in the shade with a fruit jar over them. I will ask my neice how to do it too she has done them. But if you find out let me know.

A rose cutting would be really cool, what can I send you in return?

I found this page on rooting roses: http://www.goldcoastrose.org/shared/rooting-roses.htm It has some fun ideas that I'd like to try.

Here's another one I've been meaning to try: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/rosespro/msg062227192992.html.

What I'm doing right now with cuttings is I'm sticking them in foam. You can find out how to do this here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/469316/ My cuttings all look really good but no roots as of yet. And this method is super easy too!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Michelle, you already sent me a Henna plant a few months ago. This will be my part of the trade if I can get a good cutting. Jeanette

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks! I'll insist on paying for postage since you paid for postage on the henna. How is your henna doing by the way?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

When you think you want to get it let me know and I will go down and try to get a cutting. I had a brug freeze in the mail a couple of weeks ago so take that into consideration. Are you guys getting snow and freezing weather.

The Henna is probably the prettiest leaf I've seen. They are just so slow growing. Is that natural? Or something I am doing wrong?

Jeanette

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I think I'll get back to you in the spring then? We are getting snow and freezing weather, I just wish we'd get more snow so skiing would be better!

Henna is slow growing if it's not hot and sunny like it likes it. Mine has slowed down to almost no growth too. As soon as it'll be warm enough to put outside, they should take off again. They seem to grow so fact infact, that I'm going to start some seeds to grow in the ground as annuals.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Michelle,

Glad you want to wait. I was down looking at my rose yesterday and it lost all of it's leaves since the last time I saw it. We had that real cold spell, -24 for a couple of days and that must have done it.

Anyway, since then it has new growth but it is weak growth.

See you in the spring, Jeanette

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

-24!!!! Holy Moly that's cold! Keep warm and I'll get back to you later.

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Micha- send me shipping and I can send you a rooted cutting from my grandmothers red rose. I'll get the name tomorrow- it's beautiful and has lots of clusters of medium sized blooms. It's a climber.

Pretty sure they are rooted- started them a few weeks ago and they are starting to bud now.
Lemme find a picture....pretty sure I have one on my computer.
Email me in case I lose this thread.

It's gorgeous! Sending you an email.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Crimsontsavo, That is a beautiful rose. You said you took the cuttings a couple of weeks ago and they are rooted already? What do you do with them? That is really fast. Even for Florida isn't it?

Jeanette

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

I dont know much about roses, but I remember we had Blaze climbers when I was a kid. Could that be what that rose is called Crimsontsave?

Atchison, KS(Zone 5b)

mns2lv4ever, and kathys999 your roses look like fairy tea roses, they are wonderful

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

I found an old fashion climber called Blaze at Lowes the other day for 2.98. :) These are the kind of roses my mom and dad had when I was a kid. They had a arbour over the front door and I remember it being LOADED with roses all the time. I love flowers of memories. I'm not sure where I'm gonna put it, but I'll find somewhere!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

We'vestill got snow from 2 months ago only it is now ice. The nights are so cold it doesn't have a chance to thaw.

I haven't forgotten the cuttings you want Michelle. Besides the own root, climber Polka, I forgot I have a Hansa Ragosa and own root Austrian Copper. The last one doesn't need a cutting. It has new starts coming up all around the original plant.

Sounds like you are going to get cuttings from some nice roses from all of these rose people. Let me know what you want from me, but it will be a while. The ground is frozen solid and I can't get to the Regosa. It is iced in.

Jeanette

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

A later trade sounds good to me! Most everything of mine is frozen in too. I'll have lots of new perennials from seed I started this winter!
