Passiflora Alata?

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Just a few questions:

Are the fruit edible?
What is the taste reminescent to?
Hot summers or cool summer?
Does it grow as big as Quadrangularis?

I guess that's it, but if anyone want to shoot me any pointers I'd like to hear them.

San Diego, CA

P. Alata. I am not sure how big it gets, mine is in a pot, so it is kinda restricted, but the fruits are really nice and sweet, but not too sweet. Don't know if you've ever had Maliformis, but I think it is somewhat similar, but much more of it of course. Size is close to baseball size, but oblong shaped. It takes my 90 degree summers just fine and seems to be one of the more cold tolerent of the single lobed, large leafed types. Let me know if you need more info.

That answers everything, thanks! I can't wait for summer so I can start growing again!!

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Ohh *looks that plant up!*. Are their poisonous passifloras?

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I saw some where that some species' leaves can be poisonous, but I assume you mean fruit. Jeez, I hope not, b/c I'm likely to eat them first and ask later. Lol. Not the brighest system here.

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Me too, LOL.
Do I owe you shipping for Lupine seeds Michelle?
It would ahve been from last year sometime. I own some Mystery Michelle on DG money, LOL.

Big Bear City, CA

Hi Mich..

I grew them by the ocean in Calif. but had a devil of a time getting them to stay on the vine long enough to get ripe. I would say that would be cool summer in that the area they were growing was around 70-75 degrees most of the time. Crazy flowers arn't they?

I don't remember sending lupine so it must have been another Michelle. Good luck finding them, there's alot of Michelles out here.

Maybe they fell off b/c of the ocean breezes? Just a guess here. Lol, I would have taped them on some how. I hope the hot, humid and still summer in MD will encourage good growth. It seems to do well for the other passifloras.

My P. Nephrodes flowered in the house a few days ago!!! Indigoez is hogging all the space for nephrodes but I'll post a pic there as soon as I get my film developed. I'm using a disposable until I can remember to go out and buy a new digital.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I don't think there are poisonous passion fruits; there are nonedible passion fruits, which taste bad. P. morifolia has nonedible fruit.

Thanks Clare!

Some red "imported" from Peru Passifloras are poison to Monarch Butterfly larvea. Passiflora is a host to Butterflies and that was my goal. My red-not-Alata vine is not what I'd hoped for, but it's mighty pretty. It's going to Ga this Spring.

That's beautiful! Are you gonna save some seeds? :-D

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

It just won't make fruit, so I guess I'm out of luck for seeds. I will root some cuttings later today.
Where in Fl is Fountain?

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Not super far from Jacksonville- approximately 4 hours or so. (we're right near Panama City).

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Ha,Ha,Ha not far, if I head out that way I'll let youu know, or send a cutting? Sidney

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

A cutting would be great- a visit even greater! LOL
PC isnt so grand, LOL- too many tourists. Fountain has too many meth heads- was up most of last night worried sick over my sister- three meth heads came to her house and would NOT leave- the neighbour had to come with a shot gun- she is here now afraid to stay there alone with the baby. I was online all day and she couldn't call!- Just felt horrible. :-(
Last night the druggies were running our road all night long. Not sure if they were after meth or pot- hope it was the latter. Meth is nasty stuff. Grr

Oak Grove, MN(Zone 4a)

Crimson, sounds kind of scary there-plant a prickery garden!

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Imma plant a Big Mean Dog garden soon, LOL. Maybe a bulldog or a mastiff, LOL. Want a dobe, but mum hates them.
Ahhh how about deadly nightshade dipped arrows! LOL

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Me thinks it's time to call 911! Even a small dog, will raise cain and big dogs dont stop bullets, which are used to repel them.
I suggest surrounding house with Bouganvilla, barberry, or is it birberry(?), roses and anything that will back off dopes. Mesquite has 1" long thorns, but we don't need it here in grow anything Fla.LOL
I have small dogs and they tell me everytime someone sets foot in my yard.
This is Henry checking out my every move.

Sorry about the Hi-jack Capt.

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Ohh I'm sorry too! :-O Last post on this thread I promise! LOL
We have an aussie terrier that raises cain- so far he's working. I just feel safer with a big dog though. That's a cute pom! They are my small breed of choice. :-)
I gotta go to work now- y'all have a good`un!

No worries. Sorry about all that Crim. That's terrible, what do you think they were at her house for? The worst we get around these parts is those kids with their marijuana, and of course drinking but that's international.

Darn kids with their rock n roll music!!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

That's exactly what they said to us 40 years ago. of course the word "teenage" wasn't used until about 10 years before I was one.

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

More than likely they saw the "For Sale" sign and were going to break in and steal stuff- maybe even set up a meth house. Makes me so mad I can't think. I wanna whack them all over the heads with a shovel and bury them shallow. :-D
Between the booze and the meth- Fountain is gonna go farther down hill than it already was. Were hoping all the druggies move farther out, LOL.
I gotta get off here- nap time, LOL.

Oak Grove, MN(Zone 4a)

I thought meat products were not good for the compost pile? LOL, just kidding!

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

LOL Sylvia!!!! I'll bury them in my future carnivorous plant bed, haha.
