Hosta 'Sea Lotus Leaf'
Hosta

This hosta has grown to this size in just two years. Grown at the edge of spruce trees.

Lovely one. How large are the leaves in diameter? Do you know the name it carries?

Sorry, I see that is "Sea Lotus Leaves.

They must have been about 10 inches last summer. I had purchased it as a bare root plant the previous summer and never expected that much growth in one year.

That's a lovely picture. I'm amazed that it has done so well around the spruce. Tanic acid can keep most domestics from doing well, but the hostas don't mind the shade.

I have other hostas that are doing not too too bad under the spruce but this guy seems to love it. I badly wanted a shade garden and the only trees in my yard were spruce so I went for it with some success.

where do you garden, Carla?

Prince Edward Island. I garden next to the northumberland strait which moderates the temp a little bit.

I'll bet that is some beautiful country where you are! You are zoned higher than me, for sure. I actually live in a milder part of Alaska myself, since we are coastal. Resurrection Bay is fed by the Japanese current and is ice free all year long. I'm glad to see you've added more info to your name. That helps other DGers know what you can grow, etc. We are a diversified bunch here! When you mentioned spruce, I figured you were a northern gardener!

Carla, beautiful hosta and not a blemish on it anywhere. I don't have enough shade yet to grow many hostas. I had a 100 at my other place and had to leave most of them there. Moved here almost 10 years ago, with nothing but sage and grass so all my trees are 10 years or younger. I guess my favorites are the variegated leaved varieties. Post more if you have them. Donna

weesingreens - The bay in front of our home is ice free about 2 out 3 years. Winter seems a lot colder and longer when there is ice. When it does freeze over it isn't usually until about the end of January so only for a few months. We have managed to have a swim on January 1st every year now for 13 years. I always say my first cruise is going to be up the west coast to Alaska.

rutholive - My husband sometimes mentions selling and moving closer to our work and I start to panic. All the heart and work that goes into a garden ... I don't think I could leave it. It must have been heartbreaking to leave all those beautiful hostas behind. My shade garden is my favorite part of the garden.

Commuting is always a hastle, especially in the winter. Luckily, my DH is self employed and seldom goes 20 miles out of town. I don't work outside the home during the winter, and during the summer, I take care of my little greenhouse business and clean cabins at a B&B just down the road... a nice walk. I'd be horrified if I had to move!

Just wanted to say this is a really neat photo! Thanks for sharing it. Greta
