Large Leafed Hoyas

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

This is the first part of a couple of threads I am posting on different characteristics of Hoyas. I thought it would be a good source for information about our favorite addiction!!! Then I will consolidate all the entries into lists....

So, #1 -

What do you consider could be in the Large Leaf category?

Edited to suggest 5" or more as a large leaf...OK?

OMGosh, we forgot the jolly green Giant...H. glabra. Also, H. citrina can get large.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

OH...I just saw it...it JUMPED out at me as I scrolled down. Another notch in the old belt for the wonders of maturity!!!

OK...

H. macgillivrayii
H. archboldiana X H. onychoides
H. australis ssp. tenuipes (my clone from Kapoho)
H. erythrina would also qualify here as her leaves ARE long.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Do you consider H. pachyclada to be 'large leaved'?
A couple of leaves on mine are 5" plus.....

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

WOW, that is impressive, Nan. Yup...I would except usually they aren't that big. What do you do to it...metabolic steroids??

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

lol, well....it had large leaves when I purchased it (must have been a rooted cutting from a large plant?) and they just continued to grow that way. I'm pretty positive it *is* pachyclada, as it did bloom last spring, and I compared it to photos.

What size are H. pachyclada's leaves, normally?

are there other hoyas with similar blooms that resemble H. pachyclada?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Offhand I don't know...I am sure there are. You might cruise thru some of the photo sites...H. pachyclada flowers are hemispherical and very white....basically.

I just noticed the size of this leaf on my hoya Fungii. I'm not sure if this is "normal" or not, but it measures 4x5 inches.

Awanda

That's gorgeous Awanda. Obviously a very happy hoya!! I love it when what we expect from a hoya outdoes itself...grows faster, bigger or blooms early! Part of the fun, eh?

Ok here is another large leaf hoya I found. It's a Vitelina and measures 6x31/4 inches.

Wow...that's another one...H. vitellina...it can have huge leaves.

Also, H. vitellinoides with the pale green leaf and the dark green veins. GREAT!

OK...here's a puzzle: in the same pot, the SAME plant...of H. mindorensis, some of the leaves are a pale kind of green and the other leaves are dark green, larger, shiny...they look like two different plants.

Any one getting why hoyas are so difficult to ID by leaves?

Man...even the flowers change!!! I have a photo on my website of H. pimentelliana when first opened...last night we looked at an older blossom and it was TOTALLY, but TOTALLY different.

Whew...maybe I will switch to Philodendrons!

Valley Village, CA

Another one forgotten . Hoya latifolia or renamed
Hoya latifolia ssp. kinabaluensis 1991 or later Hoya loyceandrewsiana 1195 that is the name I have know it for years. Awanda has this plant, it's big and will get bigger. Norma
