I live in zone 9b. Some call it 9a. Can I grow tropicals. I do know that Cannas grow like crazy here. It is very hot in summer and freezes occasionally in winter tho not below 32. I would like to know what would grow well here that is highly fragrant. plants, bushes and shrubs.
tropicals
Here is a site with lots of info on tropicals and it's geared to Arizona gardeners. http://deserttropicals.com/
They have lots of tropical plants with pictures and info and they also list what is hardy and what is not. I think they are based in Phoenix, they don't sell plants, they are an info site.
I like to grow elephant ears, gingers, palm trees and banana trees. You would be surprised what will grow, that is not really supposed to. On the other hand, I have lost some things too. This year, we had below 32 for several days, and that is unusual for us; usually it is just a few hours at 32, so I may not have much come back. Time will tell. It is like that here; every five or six years, we get a hard freeze and the bouganvillias and other tropicals die.
You certainly should be able to grow them. I am in zone 9a in Florida, but my guess is we are a lot more humid, especially in the summer or when we have 3 hurricanes in a row. Yes, that's where I'm from.
I do not have a greenhouse, but am able to grow anthuriums and orchids. I simply bring them inside if the temperature is going to go below 40. We have an area next to the carport that has light shade from taller plants. That's where most of the bromeliads are planted, and we can throw a frost cover over them if it's going to freeze. I've been growing them there for years. They are also all over my yard.
I have a pretty extensive library of tropical plants and lists of temperatures they can handle. Let me know about any particular plants you would like to grow and I'll be glad to look them up for you. MotherNature4
