Octopus Arms
Monadenium ellenbeckii
Just added to my indoor house plants garden.
Octopus Arms (Monadenium ellenbeckii)
ok bucko, whered you get this one??? huh huh? hehehe ;0)
Boy, this picture is just screaming for a caption or some balloon dialogue!
Hmmm, maybe we could have a talent show or contest for the best caption or dialogue. hehehe :)
[But don't ask me to be a judge.....lol ]
They seem to be waiting for a bus or something, don't they?
probably the 'something'. Maybe warmer weather.
Well, I thought I'd better look these fellows up on the PlantFinder, since I've been making fun of them! Over there you mentioned that they burn in the hot sun, yet they are zoned for 10 & 11. Is it just because they are young?
They might not like full hot sun in this desert, but the zones, I believe are for cold tolerances. (At least thats the way I understand it.) When I say 'warmer', I mean warm enough to start growing, like in spring-time., by the time it reaches 110-115F month after month.........well you can guess the rest.
Maybe we should start a 'heat/direct sun' tolerance scaling system. Dunno.
Boy, I'm totally ignorant when it comes to the heat zones. Aren't there 'Sunset' zones for that?
Probably.
Are you in high desert... do you have cold weather?... you can see I'm pretty geography ignorant!
I am about 35 miles SE of Houston and anything that says full sun you can forget it. It is really morning sun afternoon shade. Nothing can tolerate the afternoon sun here in the summer (which is 95% of the year I think).
I sure like your octopus arms.
Could be 2 caterpillars doing stand up comedy. (Hey did you here the one about the...person with the octopus arms?) hehe lol ;0)
My elevation is about 1100.
It dips below freezing about 3-7 times per winter.
Full sun, it's about the same as ilovejesus99's, Many plants need shade or partial shade from the afternoon direct sun. (in summertime).
Living in Alaska, it is hard to imagine freezing in Arizonza, but I'm pretty geography impaired. My husband, who's been almost everywhere, just shakes his head at me sometimes! I'm afraid my succulent growing is limited to houseleeks and sedums and some of the saxifraga. Any cactus would have to stay indoors year 'round. I see a comment that this one should get a red tinge to it in direct sun... must a in a kinder summer sun than yours.
Welp, I'll hopefully find out about the red tinge this spring/summer.
Keep us posted!
OK.
