Hello all I was out at the local lowes and thought theese were the neatest things. I dont know much about them but hope to keep them alive lol. Any tips? I hope you like the pictures.
Thanks
Jerry and Carla
look what I found at lowes
How neat!
I never find stuff like that around here
and those are all ones I've been wanting to try
I wish you much better luck with yours than I am having with mine! I know they should be kept in a saucer of water at all times so they can drink to their heart's desire! Alas, my little traps are turning black and dying off. New ones continue to form, though, so I'm not giving up yet! Maybe they are just acclimating to their new (cooler) environment?
I will be anxious to share all the wonderful info our fellow gardeners offer!
Sequee, I found some info on the web about the flytraps. The traps turning black is normal -- you just pick them off. Mine died, which according to the article I read is the fate of 99% of the little things. Apparently they are very hard to grow outside of a controlled environment.
I had what was labelled 'cobra lily' in my kitchen for months and it worked great for keeping down the little gnats we get. At some point, though, I got it TOO wet -- so I'm watching for another one.
Good luck with your little plant.
I have the PINGUICULA MORANENSIS, the Scarlet Belle, and the Venus FlyTrap, and only the PINGUICULA MORANENSIS is doing real well! The Scarlet Bell is on death's door. The leaves look totally dry and I don't know how that can be, they consume quite a bit of water daily - I was refilling the sauder 2X a day, so I finally replaced it with a bowl. Maybe i should try repotting it? I guess it's possible the water isn't dispursing the foliage well enough. At this point I don't really have much to lose! Gld to know they "trap loss" is normal on the Venus - I guess I won't worry as long as new ones are developing!
I love your Cobra Lily - will be on the lookout for that next time I go to Logees! What I want to know is, how the devil can you give them too much if they are self-feeding? Mystifies me!
Good luck finding a new baby!
Only tips I can give on growing Venus Flytraps are:
High humidity, (may need to keep it enclosed if you have low humidity )
Growing medium to be kept moist at all times
Best to water with destilled water, tepid tap water second choice. Do not use fertilizer.
If it flowers it dies :(
Alas, if I have to keep it covered, it defeats the purpose of buying a carnivorous plant, no??? LOL! Guess I'll just stick to the PINGUICULA MORANENSIS - at least he's E-Z!
Thanks for tips - alas (again) - if he flowers he dies??? So not fair!
Well you can hand feed it or keep some holes in the cover :)
I had one about 50 years ago and kept it in a terrarium with a glass top ever so slightly ajar. I used to catch flies and feed it. What else did a teenager have to do back then? Nancy Lee
Gee, I didn't buy it to feed it - I bought it for BUG CONTROL! Color me silly!
The 'Cobra' actually will take more specialized care than the fly trap.
It's Darlingtonia californica and is one of the only carniv. plants that need cool water on it's roots, slowly running if possible.
Here's a link that should tell you all you need to know about their culture.

I bought mine from Lowes also.
I got there just as they were putting them on the shelf.
It's been over 6 weeks and they both are still doing fine.
One still in the unopened container and one in a cool temperature Vivarium.
The Vivarium was set up for Oregon Newts, which live in the home range as the Cobras.
It does have cool water running thru the tank.
These Cobra's have about doubled in size and spread.
Word I have from a Vivarium Forum is they will outgrow my setup in a year or so.
