CLOSED: Looking for Trade for part of my Vesey's Order

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

1/8/05 - STILL LOOKING!

I am looking for Pinkish/Purple (dark dark pink) WAVE Petunia seeds. Also looking for white, silverish or very light colored ones for contrast. I have ordered the following from Vesey's, and would split some of it with someone that would trade for my desired seeds. I only want to do one trade, so this is first come first serve.

Ruby Eclipse Sunflowers http://www.veseys.com/store.cfm?product=1887

Only the Lonely Nicotiana http://www.veseys.com/store.cfm?product=610

Mini Bar Rose (morning glory) http://www.veseys.com/store.cfm?product=3210 (pic not available on site, but if you have the catalog, you can see it in there).

Or if you see anything on my trade list, that would be fine too.

Karrie

Karrie, I've got some second generation Wave petunia seeds. I offer them because the purchased seed are so expensive. Most packets include about 10 pelleted seed for anywhere from $3-5 a pack. If you get no takers and want to give mine a try, email me.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

ok! when you say second generation, do you mean you are not sure what color they will end up? And yes, at Veseys, you got 10 seeds for like $6. So I thought I'd try through Daves first.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Well, you never know. Someone might have some they'll let go. My experience has been that the waves come back quite similar to the original, but since they are a hybrid, you never know. I first got seeds from a purple wave petunia basket back in 1998. I've been using the seeds ever since. These seeds produce the same growing habit, spreading outward, and the flowers are much the same. However, when I collected seeds from those, the resulting petunias were a deep lavender with dark veining, and they smelled wonderful. This second generation thing is really interesting. Send me an email if you want to give them a try.

Well, do you have a pic by any chance? What I am doing is this: I ordered some of those saddle bags (like hanging bags, but you hang them over your porch railing, so you get both sides). Poppysue sent me some blue wave petunia seeds, and I have ordered those Mini Bar Rose morning glories (that do well in baskets and have a vareigated ivy foilage). I think those two, plus a dark dark pink wave petunia in different variations in the 6 bags would look really nice together. Do you mean deep lavender as in a dark bluish purple? That just might work. I wish the Veseys link to the Mini Bar Rose morning glories showed the pic - they are very cool looking. You know, I'm almost thinking maybe white would be good in there too...... actually necessary.

Karrie, being in Washington, we can probably grow lots of the same annuals. My summers get lots of moisture, but probably don't get as hot as yours. I love to fill baskets with all sorts of things, so I can really appreciate your project. I found a picture of the minibar rose mg's: http://www.seedman.com/image/2452.jpg Here is a picture of your blue waves: http://gurneys.com/product.asp?pn=63070

So, if I understand correctily, these are bags filled with soil that hang over the railing like saddle bags. Do the flowers spill over the top of the bags or do they have holes in the sides?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I think they have holes in the sides, as well as spill over the top (that's how the picture looked). I just went to the Veseys website and they don't seem to have a pic of it. I wish you had a Veseys catalog so you could see what it looks like.

My summers here are hot and dry, not at all like in Seattle. I'm on the far east side of the state, and we get little rain here during the summer.

That pic from seedman.com looked exactly like the photo in the catalog. Weird.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Ah, well if your summers are hot and dry, my trailing flower suggestions may not suit your climate. Lobelia is always a pleaser in hangers, but linaria and nemesia are wonderful here as well. I doubt they'd do well in hot, dry weather. At any rate, I think your color scheme could use some light colors, as you suggested. I have some second generation Lilac Wave petunias. They are a very pale lavender with an occasional splash of white on the petals.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Lobelia grows well here. I've never tried the other.

That Lilac Wave petunia sounds like it might be pretty with what I'm doing.

Karrie, here are the Lilac Waves, 1st gen.

That would probably work with what I am planning.

I'm still hoping someone will jump in here with some dark dark pink wave petunias.

There is also a Pink Wave that is more of a fushcia color with a little white toward the center. It is not one of my favorites, but is a deep pink. There is also a Rose Wave, but I've never grown that one. I still think you need to find something paler, since you will have the rose color of the morning glories and the purple blue of the petunias... contrast would be nice...white, pale yellow, lilac, soft pink... something like that. How about violas? They will hang down, as well. Ah, well, maybe somebody will come by with some Waves for you... there is one called Tidal Wave that is a silvery white color, too.

Considering what I wrote in my first post, only one trade, and all these posts, I may have to start a new one, lol. Or maybe just edit it.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Maybe I should just butt out of your thread and let you do some trading! LOL! I've got a habit of trying to reinvent the wheel. Just email me if you want any seeds I have!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Well, I broke down and went and bought some seed pellets tonight - the Silver Tidal Wave ones, to go with what I already have. I think the whole combo will work, so I'm going to go ahead and close this thread.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Sounds good, Karrie. You should get good germination, so 8 or 10 plants are a lot for the money when you thing about it. Waves put out lots of blooms and fill a large area.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

yes - I hope they don't take over my saddle bags so much that they hide the other flowers I'm planting in them!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, you might consider plants that don't have huge flowers, but dangle, such as lobelia... well, there I go again!...be sure to post a picture when they are up and running. When do you start setting out plants in Spokane?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I set mine outdoors around mothers day - some I harden off slowly before that. Lobelia is pretty - I've used that before - nice airy look to them. These Tidal Waves don't have too big of flowers - specs say 2 to 2 1/2 inches. I'm just talking about the whole plant being to big. I'll just have to be careful where I place them in the bags (smaller ones over the tops, to grow over).

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, the flowers don't seem overly large... I've seen them growing, but they are prolific bloomers. Most often you see the Wave petunias in pots by themselves. They tend to fill the whole pot.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I may try that as well - I bought 20 seeds.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I've seen waves planted in the front of beds, as well, and it's beautiful. The Silver Waves are quite eye catching.
