My Persian Shield Bloomed?

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

Who knew?

I know next to nothing about this pretty little plant. It has purple leaves and likes shade so I bought some near-death, on-sale plants and stuck 'em in the ground.

Now look at 'em! I had no idea they made such a pretty bloom! Or that they bloom in January... Who knew?

Here's a closer-up shot of the flowers.

Dogzilla,

Just wait till next season, when this plant may become HUGE if you protect it during cold weather by bringing it inside if necessary. It's an annual in northern climates, so I keep mine in a large pot, prune it back during the winter, and then put it back outside in the spring. During the summer its leaves remind me of the iredescence of dragonfly wings! Even though you're in Florida, you should know that a single freeze will defoliate this plant.

Good info! It's very protected in the spot its in and heavily mulched.

I never thought about the irridescense looking like dragonfly wings, but I bet that's why I like this plant so much! That and the fact that green and purple are my favorite colors.

Thanks for your tips.
