Yes, young tree.
I wonder why it looks different.
Heres some more images in the PlantFiles

Xenomorf
a Google search of Araucaria heterophylla
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Araucaria+heterophylla&btnG=Google+Search
see the foliage of first link in Google
most all but two of the links in Google are showing trees with this type of foliage like mine
the two different are the "franco" http://www.dipbot.unict.it/orto/0007-1.html
& a page by Perry describing indoor plants http://pss.uvm.edu/pss123/folarauc.html
stating

Quoting:
None are usually seen in U.S. commerce although some are listed elsewhere.

the tree he shows looks very much like yours & JohnnyMTB's
all the rest of the links show trees with tight spiral foliage like mine & the other trees in the PF

Cool. So, now we can make a separate listing? for the 'Franco' variety, and separate the two types?

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

i'm sure they are close relatives in some way
but i have spent at least 4 hours now on Google
& don't have an answer for you :-)
maybe some of the puzzle experts on the identification forum would like a stab at it ?

OK, I'll see what info I can dig up in addition to.

That quote is about cultivars. [from that page]
The 'Franco' is the name of one of the persons that published or documented the species at one time.
Which still leads us to a dead end, as to explain why they look different (except the plausibility of the age difference).
