Does anyone have seeds (or a Canadian source) for the Dancing Ladies Lychnis? Mine finally quit re-seeding. I can find the red Maltese Cross and have had it growing quite happily for several years, but the company I bought the Dancing Ladies from no longer carries it. I could trade for the red, or name your poison, there's a good chance I have it.
Lychnis wanted
Which Lycnis is this? Do you have the real name? I have several varieties of Lychnis.
OK. It's coronaria. I can help you.

Thanks echoes...I need only 10 seeds or so, and what can I send in return?
Ceedub, I'd forgotten about Pike's. But aren't they just plants? I also checked T & M on line--hadn't realized they had more items than show in their catalogue--and they have it. But I'm not ordering from them this year. I did an extra large order from them last year and don't like to pay shipping (and sometimes get dinged for customs) for just one packet. Not to mention the exchange! But that is getting better for us all the time.
I think I'm going to order from T&M this year. I have a list already and I'm sure I read somewhere that they will ship from Canada to Canadian customers, but I can't find where.
What color Lychnis did you want? What can you send in return? Well I could use a new pair of winter boots, size 8.5W. No? Email me what you got.
So while we're at it Christine, what are you looking for and where's your trade list?
I have a large amount of Lychnis coronaria seeds. The flowers were fuschia coloured. I also collected seeds from the Lychnis 'Vesuvius' plant that we got this year. I could spare some of them.
T & M sends their Canadian orders out from Fort Erie Ontario. Mom and I ordered from there for the first time this year. It was quite a large order by the time we got through with it but we did get 7 packages of free seeds.
echoes, I was afraid someone would ask me that. I don't have a trade list. I don't know how to harvest seeds from anything. I know I should try to germinate seeds, but its just so much easier and time-saving for me to go to my nursery and buy guaranteed healthy seedlings. My major passion has always been tropical houseplants - I never had an outside garden before I moved here 3-1/2 yrs ago, and it was just a natural progression for me to buy the plants the same way I buy my tropicals - and I can get them at the same place that I get most of my tropicals. These factors, combined with my commute/work schedule (I'm gone 11-1/2 hrs a day) means I'll probably plunge head first into it once I retire - only 13 yrs., 4 months to go ...
My little perennial gardens are still in their infancy, as there was nothing here before except a field. I was able to divide my Japanese Iris last fall to share, as it had gotten quite large. That was stressful, as I didn't even know where to put the shovel (uh, in the ground?). I was a nervous wreck. But, research is a beautiful thing ..... so I managed it, and they arrived alive and well. I was eccstatic.
But I digress; basically, I feel guity about "just buying plants", but its just gotta be that way for a few more years.
Thanks for asking! Sorry my explanation is so long. Guilt is a terrible thing ... lol.
Christine.
Don't feel guilty, Christine. I am in a similar boat, and it doesn't bother me. If people don't like it that you don't have seeds on your trade list, tell them to go sit and spin! ;-)
No. I am not sitting and spinning. Notice I said trade list, not seed list. Anyway, you already have two kinds of seeds you could put on it. Plants/Tropicals are popular trades too. I don't do guilt well, so I'm not going to give it to others.
HEY ,FORT ERIE THATS WHERE I'M FROM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you aren't on the defensive, echoes. I meant that first, as a joke, and second, people in general. I just didn't want Christine to feel bad. I don't have anything on my trade list except for stuff I want, but I don't think anybody really cares, do they?
That's terrific news about T & M. My seeds have always come from the States, even last year. their website and catalogue don't mention shipping from Canada..NightOwl, .have you a contact for that? Is it new this year? On the other hand, this could be a disaster for my pocketbook....
LOL I think it is new this year. I have a friend that orders from them every year and I know she was really happy that she didn't have to worry about having to pay duty any more. You still have to pay the exchange on the dollar though. I just ordered by phone the way my friend always does it. They have a toll free number. I had a list all written out with the item number for each thing and it was fast and easy.
Ditto the don't feel guilty, Christine. When you start them yourself you have other things to feel guilty about. LIke, oh my I have 75 of those when all i wanted was a six pack but maybe the seeds won't last so I better plant them all and who knew they were all going to germinate and now do I commit planticide or spend a lot of time looking for adoptive homes or expand the greenhouse area or HELP! So the nursery is sometimes a very unstressful way to go. Also in the long run i think cheaper for stuff that you know they will have. I have a major resolution this year not to start wave petunias, impatiens, etc cause they are just so darn cheap and plentiful at the big box stores. It helps me to meet the ONE TON CHALLENGE.
Boy did we have a LOT of pamphlets on that..........."ONE TON CHALLENGE."
Well, NighOwl, that's torn it. I really was NOT going to do a T & M order this year. Wasn't. No. Not going to try anything else new. Definitely not. So what was I reading with breakfast...
Old Flower Girl, I surely do envy the fact you have a choice--seeds or plants--I love growing from seed but sometimes have crop failures (like losing ALL my trailing lobelias, too late to start more), can't get seeds for things like bacopa (or can I now?) and just plain love buying perfect plants for filling out my hanging baskets. Trouble is, I do my semi-annual shopping in April, and there aren't any plants available then in our area. Last year I had to make some emergency medical trips to town in May...Dave couldn't understand why I wasn't more upset about it. Until I got home and carried my treasures inside!
LOL Ir's hard to resist once you get started. They have some neat things. My friend is always trying new seeds and gives me some of her extra seedlings. Last spring she gave me some of her Shooting Star Nemesia seedlings. I just loved them. I collected some seeds and hope I can get them to germinate.
My mom always goes overboard on the plants for her pots. This year we're going to cut down and have Brugmansias all around the patio instead.
Hi Chilko,
I have some Lychnis seeds- coronaria as well as "x arkwrightii". Having said that, I'm new at trading, and am just on my way to the "seed harvesting" forum to make sure I'm saving my seeds correctly. (It's taking an awful long time to get to that forum though).
I harvest all the seeds I can and simply plant them up the following year, if something doesn't grow, I'm not terribly upset - but someone else might be. (I usually leave the seeds in my greenhouse over winter) . I have grown the coronaria seeds very successfully - will try the arkwrightii this year. If anyone is interested in the coronaria seeds, I have lots. (Christine - wanna try some - I'm into tropical house plants too).
Right - and now it directly to that harvesting forum.
Joanne
