Here's some basic info.

Caladiums are propagated by division, after a period of dormancy. each bulb will put off smaller bulbs, that are broken off and planted.

Caladium is not as easy to propagate as most other plants where you simply take cuttings or grow from seed. If you buy a caladium tuber and grow in with plenty of light and fertilizer, it will improve in size. The result will be what I call a "composite" tuber, e.g. a large connected tuber consisting of smaller tubers. If planted this way, the tuber will put out a lot of leaves. However, you can also pull the smaller tubers apart ("divide") to get more. Then just regrow these again with plenty of water, fertilizer and light, and they, too, will grow larger.

Note: light conditions vary by type, but generally a lot of shade is not recommended (except if you are located in very southern climates). Also, do not draught stress these plants. A good water retentive but well draining soil is recommended. Also, for the to improve in size, you need to add plenty of fertilizer (plenty).

I bought a very nice caladium from a local nursery last summer. I've been overwintering it inside in a northern window. There's only a couple leaves left on it. I've been sparingly watering it. Do I need to lift the "tubers' and allow them to air dry? Here's a pic I took last summer: http://www.q7.com/~erasmus/images/garden_2004/garden_in_aug_04/hostas_callas_caladium.JPG

This is my first caladium so any advice is greatly appreciated. :)
