Help. I'm a newbie.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello,

I am a newbie to Brugmansias. I have never grown one before but I am quite interested. So far all my plants have been houseplants. And I've only been doing this for about a year now. I have 160 indoor plants so far. However, since I am running our of room inside, I have decided that I need to move outdoors. And the plants that interest me the most are the Brugmansias. I do not know anything at all about them. I would appreciate any advice that you could share with me, such as when to plant, how to plant, etc. I really enjoying learning and would really like to learn more about these plants and how to grow them. Thank you so much.

JesseK

You'll love them!

Reading is always best before trying new plant group...try taking a look at these sites:

Welcome JessieK, I just started with these plants and I am hooked, the main thing to know is that they will not survive in your zone in the winter, you will need to move them into the warm, and Joseph is right the best thing you can do right now is read up on them so you will be ready when you get your first seeds, or plants. Good luck.

I am also new to Brugmansia flowers. I knew nothing about them until around the middle of Oct. Since then I am learning a lot. The Brugmansias and Friends threads are the best. Just keep checking in every day and read all the new stuff the members post, and then start reading a lot of the old post. Believe me you will soon learn a lot. I still have a lot of questions but it seems that every other Brug grower has had the same questions or some that I never thought of. I have 25 brugs growing in my computer room right now. 9 of them I started from seed and the others are from cuttings that the DG members have sent me. So needless to say I can't wait until spring to plant them. Like today the ones I started from seeds were starting to wilt down a lot but after I watered them they look great again. I am so afraid of over watering and letting them get root rot that I trend not to water. I got one off EBay and it looks good except some of the leaves has brown spots on them (bottom leaves) so I send a e-mail to the person I got it from asking if they new what I was doing wrong. The reply was either I am over feeding or I could be under feeding. Or I might be over watering, or I could be under watering. Duh figure that. So I slowed down on the plant food and water. Will the new upper leaves are looking good now. Like I said I will be glad when spring comes so I can plant them outside. I usually do a better job with plants outside then I do in the house. It sounds like you do great with house plants. 160 WOW, I wonder what my DH would do if I had that many?

Welcome, JessieK. If you grow one, you'll want more and more.

Indeed. You will never, ever, ever forget the joy of seeing that first flower open and the fragrance. ahhhhhhhhhhhh

Jesse -- Welcome to the Brug Forum! There is a wealth of information to be found on tons of threads within the Forum, and lots of people here that will be more than happy to help you with your specific questions. Just ask :)

For starters, as Doris said, they won't overwinter outdoors in your growing zone. So, you'll want to keep them in big pots. And they need lots of fertilizer to produce their lush foliage and pretty blooms.

2puddogs -- have you posted an image here? I'd like to see what those leaves look like. It doesn't sound like a watering issue to me...

I agree with 2pugdogs, just read the forum every day and ask questions on the threads. We seem to cover what needs to be done as it needs to be done! And so many of us have different ways that work for us, it is great getting such a wide view to pick from. I learn new tricks all the time from here, it is great.

Welcome to the brug forum Jessy and Gerris2!

Thank you all for the welome. So what do I do now? Do I go buy some seeds? And how do I get them started? Is now the time to start them?

Here is a picture of a leaf that was on one of my cuttings. I pinched it off and haven't seen anymore on any of my cuttings or on the ones I started with seeds. All my cuttings are kept together on shelves in front of a south window and the ones started with seeds are under the grow lights. But my Tequila Sunrise the one with the real problem is on the floor with a Hibiscus that is starting to come to life with a grow light on them.

I've had that too and thought at first that it was some kind of sucking insect, but I can't find anything. A week or so after I first found the problem I also found a big boxelder bug. Once he was removed from the house, I haven't had anymore trouble.

2pubdogs, I agree with Brugie -- it looks like bug damage to me. From the way you described the damage, that's what I figured, but I wanted to see pix. I have some leaves that look like that in my GH, but its a burn. I sprayed an organic oil to get rid of bugs, and it must've gotten too hot, because I have lots of brown spots now :( Oh well, its only temporary. But check around for bugs. Hope this is helpful!

JesseK,Bruges are highly addictive. If you have any compulsive social disorders, growing bruges will only magnify them.Brugie gave me one plant 3 years ago,now I have over 70 of them in my house, several over 7 ft tall. Thanks Shirley! best fun I have had in quite a while.

Yes and if you grow Brugs from seed you never know what groovy flower you're gonna get. Here's one I grew from a seed that I started a couple years ago. (Brugmansia suaveolens hybrid)

Joseph

PS Thanks for the welcome y'all!
