An old-timer who lives out in the bush here (he's 82, no water or power or phone--a truly amazing man) considers me his resident gardening expert. Of course, it helps that I'm the ONLY person he knows who gardens! Anyhow, he asked me if I could get him some tobacco seed and start him some plants. (That's regular tobacco, NOT wacky tabaccy!) I no longer preach to him about smoking--at his age, he simply doesn't care. So, anyone know? And how tender is the plant? Can it be grown in a container?
Growing Tobacco for smoking
Didn't find any in my Cdn catalogues but lots in US catalogues. I googled Tobacco and came up with some. Do you want me to go further and find out more info. Don't know how much time you can spend online. LMK

thanks a lot for your efforts, Ginny...my friend says he can get it from Germany (probably easier than the States!); I just thought there might be some available in Ontario (remember seeing something about that many years ago. $$$ wise I have virtually unlimited computer time but have to negotiate with my husband for use of the satellite internet modems!
Rosemary, I don't know if this is the kind of tobacco you are looking for, but I just today received my 2005 Sunshine Farm Seeds Catalog. They are out of Kelowna and sell open pollinated and certified organic seeds. Anyway, under the heading of Herbs, they have listed :
Tobacco (A) Seed from George, a Cree Shaman friend. 6' - 8' plant for offerings...
Don't know quite what that means but if you were interested, their website is :

Thanks Donna, I've ordered 2 packages...I understand the seeds are very tiny, and tough to get started. Hope he's prepared to look after them--I'll get them into 4" pots and then outta here!
Glad to hear it. Hope it works for your friend. :-)
Don't know if your friend is still looking for this, Rosemary, but found this entry on ebay tonight.
