Well...what plants did you lose?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

My only loss is a Majesty Palm. Leaves are freeze-burned pretty bad and I am unsure if the plant will make it. How did you fare?

Just the chayamansa (tree spinach) which I should have wrapped. It may possibly come back from the roots. The Passifloras look bad but they invariably come back from the roots, and send up new shoots in the oddest places. The banana suffered of course but is already opening new leaves. The fruit on the tangerine and lemon trees actually are better flavored.

Jester,
My Magestic Palms were damaged by heavy frost, too, last year. However, they came back just fine.

In order to have a taller Magestic, I may pot
and overwinter in green house this Fall.

Concerned about my hydrangeas. All leaves wilted, however, each bush is full of buds. Hope they bloom this coming May.
HAPPY GARDENING

I lost coleus and probably some small starts of thunbergia erecta plus two mango trees that were about 6 ft tall. I think the biggest and most disappointing loss is the ylang ylang tree. I wrapped it, but it's all black and doesn't look good. My bananas that had flowers now have nanas. It looks funny, the leaves are all brown but the stem is still good.

Ouch Calalily, you had some bad losses. Some chance those plants come back though, right? I know nothing of Mango's but at 6' you'd think they would come back. I am hoping my majesty palm comes back but you never know for sure.

Jester, I should have wrapped the trunks with newspaper, but I thought they were big enough to survive. I hope that at least part of the mango trunk is still alive. I'm not cutting anything off till I know for sure. I trimmed some hibiscus and a tabernamontana back last evening and some more on the brugs. Some plants are putting out new growth, it's sure good to see green again.
This is some crazy weather, it's been in the 80's for a week, now it's going to be 48 tonight. It's in the lower 60's right now and drizzling rain.

its back to mid 30's and raining right now in San Antonio. Well we skipped the Winter than last year I guess is the make up.

I think I'll have to add the African tulip tree to the list. It's bark is mushy and split all the way to the ground.
My friend at the nursery said not to cut anything for 4 weeks, but some things I know are gone because pink mold is growing on the bark and when I scratch the bark there is no green under it.

I have to add damage to one Dioon Spinosium (#@%)
and one Cardboard palm that was in the garage. My one remaining fishtail palm has scortched leaves but will live. Sorry to hear about then African tulip tree Calalily . In 10a this storm was a 1-1000 maybe a 1-10000 chance. Just bad luck.

Yep, a once in a hundred year kind of storm! Of course it had to pick the first winter I'm living here to do it, lol.

SUDIEGOODMAN, my varieageted hydrangeas loose all of their leaves in freezing weather. Now they have new leaves coming out just in time for the next freeze. Do not cut them back until spring when you can assess the freeze damage. I trimmed them back when I trimmed all of my perenials after a hard freeze thinking they were damaged the first year that I had them. I lost all of that year's blooms. Now, I wait until spring to assess whether or not they need trimmed back. Each winter since the first one, the stems and branches have not been freeze damaged, although the past few winters have been mild.

Hopefully, the palms you guys lost will come back. Maybe the other plants will come back from the roots, if that's any consolation.
