Damaged bougainvillea

My Mother lives in Florida and her bougainvillea was damaged by the hurricanes in the fall. It has a few leaves on it and she is babying it. She asked me if she's wasting her time. I don't know anything about bougainvilleas. Does anyone have any info I can give her? Thanks.

She should'nt worry too much. Bougainvillas are really tough plants. It should leaf out again in the Spring. Good Luck!

Thank you Lorien4. I will pass the information on to Mom.

When we kept the bougies in TN in the greenhouse, they would sometimes loose their leaves in the winter. Just don't overwater them right now. Our bougies here are pretty leafless too after the weird weather we had at Christmas.

THey are tough plants. My mom have a huge one. She would cut and replant it. It rooted! She have good luck with that plant! I have 5 of them. I brought mine in garage. I dont want to take a risk to lose them! lol

It'll come back and be just fine, like most of the other plants damaged by the hurricanes.

Hey, speaking of which, are y'all north of me seeing higher orange prices now?

How should you be taking care of them in the house? I brought one in for the first time and it was doing great and growing new leaves. Now the stems looked dried out but I think I see a little shoot.

Try to create a tropical environment for them. They live in a place where there's high humidity and 70 degrees feels cold! So you'll want to keep the humidity at 60% of higher, and keep the plant watered, sort of damp. (not dripping wet all the time). Mist it perhaps, once a day to help the plant with the humidity. Keep the temp above 70, preferably 75ish. Bright sunny window. If they don't get full sun for at least 6-8 hours a day, consider popping a grow bulb into a nearby lamp to help them out a little with tropical light patterns. Should be good to go.
