Micro mini sinningias

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I got around to taking some pictures today. These are Sinningia pusilla on the left and Sinningia sp. Rio das Pedras (i.e., as yet unnamed species found in Rio das Pedras) on the right. They are in 3 oz plastic cups (bottom half is 100% perlite, top half is a peat mix) in a glass cookie jar.

I got those from a friend who got them from the local gesneriad society.

Patti - I forget - are you on my seed list? (not the most organized at this point, since I'm still ripening/harvesting seed).

Here's another micro mini. This is White Sprite, which is a stable sport of S. pusilla. I am growing this one in a glass yoghurt jar with no lid. I find it more susceptible to fungal problems so it does better with more air circulation.

You probably are. I'm still waiting for a few more seed pods to ripen.... patience, patience.... I don't have much of that.

I'm bumping this because we've been talking about the micro mini AV's and these are just too darn cute to not revisit! thank Key!
Can you show us some more!

Oh, fabulous! I love the delicate lavender blooms in the first photo...

I missed this the first time around because I didn't join up until the end of January, so thanks for the bump!

Your plants are so beautiful and healthy!

I was so excited to obtain a plant of Sinningia sp. Rio das Pedras from a local club. I took it home, set it up in a cute little terrarium and enjoyed it for the short time it took for the plant to kick the bucket! I have no luck with Sinningias at all. Orchids, hoyas, other gesneriads all thrive, but I am the kiss of death for Sinningias! I no longer try to grow these because of the guilt of killing each and every plant that I've ever had.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I hear ya Plantmomto
I haev never tried sinningia but I seem to kill MOST episcia I have tried :(

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I killed all my Sinningias too :((

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

looks like Keyring has the magic touch with them!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

ok, peeps.... watch for a pop quiz on micro mini sinns in a few weeks... I'm harvesting seeds for you to experiment with ;-)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh a quiz! How fun!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh Great fun ! But Keyring did you do the Av one first :))

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I am getting some of these little fellows in..so I need TIPS!
What do you put in your peat mixture?
Yours seem to be doing incredible!
And do you feel then need to be under glass in FL?

Their beautiful ! I read a lot of them like it under the light. The book I was reading was like saying different ones like different things...I'm sure your green arms will have great luck with them !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL my arms are NOT so green! I killed many an AV before I got into them!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh thats ok everyone kills them I've killed many after I got into them. lol And if I don't like how they are growing I throw them away. lol

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Ali, don't throw them away, I'll pay the shipping to have practice plants!!!

I don't feel so bad knowing that you experts kill them too. Some of my DP don't look so hot. Over water? Fertilize burn? They hate soap? I don't know.
Some are doing great, others not.

Ali, I might send Tiny Wood Trail to you with the trivia prize, I think I'm killing it.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Really ? I grow mine in natural light it seems to like it better all I've ever had. I have one I grew by leaf in natural light, and I have two ( I got one from DP took it apart) that are in isolation but ever though I took lot's of leaves off of them, roots and soil their looking good. All three are in natural light.
It seems some plants just do better for me in natural light.
