Today I was finally able to harvest my one, lone PB X Uknown pod. It held about 115 seeds , 60 of which I planted immediately. I'm happy that it ripened, considering it was on a cutting that I took in November.
Finally Ripe!
They look pretty good! Did you peel them?
Thank you and no, Monika. I stopped peeling with the first batch of seeds I received this year, and I don't peel them anymore at all. I found that I was damaging many of them during the peeling process. I have been having better germination without peeling. Just take a little longer. Then they have to work a little harder to push off the seed coat and cork, but I haven't lost one yet to that problem...

Beautiful sight.....seeds and seeds germinating, that is SO much fun!
Congrats Gretchen, looking great!!! I have a pod, but I'm not exactly sure when I should bust it open lol...it's really swollen though...any advice?
You go girl!! I bet there are some winners in there!!
Bonnie
OMG - That is so exciting...I can wait until my little seed do the sprouting thing! Great job!
Julie -- I have been watching this pod for months -- there were four identical ones on PB before I cut them off. This was the only one that survived. Today when I went to check it was split on one side and very mushy. I figured it was "now or never" so I removed it and brought inside to open. Needless to say I was quite relieved to find ripe seeds! So I think when it gets soft and mushy feeling, or splits, or both...
Thanks to you all! I now can only hope that something pretty is in there!
Fun Gretchen!!
Jeanette
Wow, you are going to really be busy with all of your babies. Congrats.
Ahhhhhhhhhh Ha! Well my few little pods are still firm...thanks Gretchen! You are bound to have some pretties come from your pod...I just know it!
Oh my.....you planted 60 of these seeds.....lol I can tell you were excited. Here is hoping you get something unique and special from at least one of those seeds.
You know, I've got pods on my brugs, they lost their leaves, due to the frost in the greenhouse, but their growing leaves again, the pods are still there, been there for 2 or 3 months now, I have no idea how to tell if their ready ornot, I see your pods are still green, so this really confuses me, maybe Ineed to check them tomorrow. how do youknow if the seeds inside are brown and ready to harvest? Monika mentioned peeling them, this just makes germination easier? can you plant them in soil instead of what you used?
sorry for all the questions, this has really got me wondering about those pods, I don't know if i'll be planting any of them, their unknowns, and I have too many in the gh now.

I'm so tickled for you Gretchen, I just love PB, she might be my very fav!! I suspect that if anyone was going to do good, despite the odds, that it would be PB. This I say because I've 'tried' to kill so many, but PB takes it like a champ - she is truly a keeper...
good harvest Gretchen. Hope it makes another real beauty for you
How absoultely exciting! WTG Gretchen :)
Congrats, Gretchen. Hope you grow some beauties.
Oh well, you all know I should have my head examined. Figured these would be good "give-away" seedlings for the Texas Round-up, if I make it there...
Kathy Ann -- Monika had mentioned on another thread that this type of brug seed pod would get soft and mushy. I waited and waited...yesterday I noticed that it had begun splitting, so I had no choice but to remove itl. And, it was soft and mushy...I don't know about the ones that got frozen. They may not be viable...
Gretchen, congrats on your seed pod! You should have some good germination. I sowed a bunch this time last year and ended up trading 30 Pink Beauty seedlings for 30 plumeria seedlings. If Nadine is here on this forum, she is growing them now. I kept a few, but they haven't bloomed yet. They too are PB x unknown. I hope you get something really nice from them.
Great!!! How exciting! Is this your 1st pod? You will be busy again next summer looks like! Cant wait to see the outcome.
Thank you Clare and Shelly! I am really, really busy! I have aboout 300 babies started for other people and yes, Shelly...this is my first pod of a PB. I had many suaveolens pods this summer from the Isabellas -- what a hussy LOL! I gave all those away except for a few that I decided to raise and give away as seedlings. It'll be interesting to see what I get from these, if anything. I sowed them right out of the pod into potting soil, as I'm out of rockwool...
Gretchen, Good for you! Now do you cover your seedlings up with plastic after potting up?
Julie, I start them in disposable aluminum cake pans that have clear plastic, domed lids. That works great! This batch is in soil because I ran out of rock wool. And, theyre in the greenhouse. I start all my seeds in the house under lights, but I have no more room at the moment. I have a bunch of seedlings that need to be moved out, but until I know the slugs are gone (my problem of the moment) they're going to stay in here...
Kaufmann, I have about twenty seedlings growing and I thought I was addicted, I see I got a long way to go LOL
LOL! Yes, Doris I think so! I have hundreds growing right now with 100 more seeds about to pop, not including these, or the seeds that are in the mail to me.... Whew!
Boy, you have been busy! You are going to have a Garden of Brugmansia Eden next summer. Wow!
Well I'm hopfully going to have a few going your way!
Gretchen you can shoot some my way too lol :-D
I hope I'll be able to do that this Spring, Julie! If these PB seeds sprout, my plan is to share the seedlings when they're old enough to ship... Say a little prayer for them :)
You got it friend! Prayer said :o)
I will even say two :) :)
I have seeds sprouting! Taking longer than usual, but they aren't under lights...
I put about a dozen seedlings in cups today and misted them with Messengers. Of course I mixed 24 ounces and I'm sure it will go bad.
I used small cups, thinking that if they get a good tight rooting system than I can go to a larger pot than usual next potting, assuming I don't put them in the ground. I dunno, guess I'll just have to see how they do. I'm thinking about rowing some of the seedlings, and see what happens. I know one thing, I've got to get going on my drip system.
You've been away or working too hard to take a computer break, huh, Gretchen??
Sherry -- I've been here at the house, just working like mad on my January computer duties. I need to do a better job of keeping my photos and documents organized in the future. I have spent the last week practically glued to my laptop, organizing photos and documents and transferring them to CD's. I also had a bunch of CD's that contained the duplicate stuff. What a mess. Too much clutter. One of my resolutions is to download the photos every week at a minimum, and keep them organized so I can find them when I need to. When I haven't been here, been busy with church stuff. Am going to try to get caught up on the posts, but I keep getting derailed by DH LOL! I can't seem to get control......................................................Sounds like your seedlings are doing great -- way to go!
