Have you tried this scarlet runner bean in your home garden yet? I wonder if it is the same one offered by Burppee's Catalog.

Blenheim, New Zealand

I have grown it for a couple of years. It is a favorite here in NZ . In winter here they die back, but come away in the spring .

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

bootandall, what's the average lowest temp you folks get in NZ, do you know?

Blenheim, New Zealand

I don't know, can't find the right info. We do get frosts, sometimes down to -5 C .
No permafrosts in Blenheim. Hope that's enough info.

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

Yes, it is enough. Thank you!

Thanks for your info. I've decided to try them and will order them thru Burpees catalog. I have a wonderful abundance of hummingbird's and I think it will bring my two passions together; gardening and the hummers.
Thanks!

Blenheim, New Zealand

good luck with them

I'm getting a little confused with the "hardiness zones" though. I have always been told that we are zone 8 but if you look on the USDA Plant Hardiness zone map we are a 10a. The Burpee seed catalog says we are in zone 8 also. Any ideas on that?

Blenheim, New Zealand

I almost think, we might be around zone 8 here, going by what grows . we don't seem to have zones here, if we do I can not find them.

That's an attractive orange hue for the flowers...I tried growing this species and mites took out the plants. So sad.

that is a shame, no mites here so far, But I have noticed heaps of woolly aphides on the raspberries

I can't believe I found the seeds at our local H&E garden /home store! They are Lilly Miller brand which is part of Ferry-Morse co. Did you start them indoors first?

Blenheim, New Zealand

Glad you found the seeds close to home.
Plant the seed where you want them to grow. If you have frosts wait till there over.

Thanks!
