Crazy mixed-up daffodils

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

We had a lot of cold recently with the crust of the ground freezing, but not very deeply. We had one day that we got down to 8 deg. Now, my daffodils have decided to come up. EEEeeeek! I'm afraid they'll get up far enough to bloom and then a hard freeze will get them. It's been in the upper 50s and 60s for about 4 days. What to do? What to do???

Hmmmm.....that's a toughy. I always vote for letting Mother Nature take her course. I suppose if you dug them up and brought them in they would bloom like a forced daff, but that's what you're trying to avoid. I'm surprised I haven't seen the same with temps in the teens and then the 60's the next week and back to the 20's. Crazy weather!

My daffodils have started coming up, too - they started several weeks ago, then we had a week of hard frosts, now we are back in the 70's for a few weeks, but the daffodil shoots don't seem any worse for the weather. This is my first year with bulbs.

I've had them come up early before, too, but never with the bud already showing. If they bloom, any cold will kill them off. They tend to fall over. It's like, "help I've fallen and I can't get up!"

Talk about crazy:
It's been warm here for 2 weeks. My daffs have a bit of green peeking thru.
They needed dividing and moving.

Anyone wanna guess what I did today??

Laid out and got a suntan?

I'm another 7a with confused bulbs. My hyacinth are coming up and I've already had a few crocus bloom while I was away over the holidays. It was 69 degrees last weekend, which totally sent the wrong message to my garden. So what do I do? Add soil or mulch? Being new to 7a, I have never had this problem before.

Last week on my way to work in DC I noticed some of the Cherry Blossoms were also blooming. Bummer :-(

Poor plants.......it'll be interesting at least to see what happens to these come spring. Would be a shame if DC didn't have all it cherry blossoms because some were preemies.

Woodspirit --- that's just mean.........from someone in iced in Kansas - home with 3 kids since Dec. 17th. Just when they were suppose to be back to school. 14° currently and awoke to 4° this morning. Ugh! Send the warm air this way, please.

lang,
Heard you guys in the heartland might have the "perfect storm" heading your way!

See the thread on the weather forum.

so what did you do, berrygirl?
langbr, so sorry to rub it in, but we'll get ours again soon. Like I said, we had a week of very cold, just before this weird warm trend, got down to 8 degrees.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

wood,
I divided my daffs.

Now that's plumb weird.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

LOL - not as weird as laying out getting a suntan though! snicker-snicker-snort
