Yes, I'm shy about introducing myself like this, something about just putting yourself "out there" like this, but here goes:
I'm Canadian, originally from South Central Ontario near Orillia, and moved here to Costa Rica about a year ago. What a change, from a zone 5b/6a to 10 plus, or whatever. Let's just say I now have a 365 day a year growing season! Sounds good, but there are negatives too. I'm just glad not to have "snowsqualls" any more, LOL, and I never was into Winter sports. I used to love spending time in my greenhouse in the Winter months. Outside there could be a blizzard, but inside it was like Spring. I used to grow anemones, freesias, and ranunculus, among other things, and they thrived inside the cool greenhouse. Certainly I don't miss those short Winter days, but I do miss the incredibly long Summer ones, like when it's still light at 9pm! Here the days are close to 12 hours long year round, which is a little hard to get used to.
My main interest/obsession is orchid growing. I've been growing them for many years, but now they stay outside rather than being crammed on windowsills or trays under grow lights in the house. I'm also into languages and am fluent in varying degrees in French, German, and Spanish. Naturally, my Spanish has improved a lot, now that I'm living in a totally Spanish speaking culture, although the dialect in Costa Rica is strange, or let's say "unique".
Anyway, I'm glad to be here at "Dave's" and have already met some great people and started trading seeds. I hope to meet more of you in the coming weeks! I'll add a photo here, but can't decide which one!

I'm kinda shy in Costa Rica!
Hi Keith - lovely picture. Not very many members from Costa Rica - and I can't think of seeing any posts from someone else there, so what a treat! I just recently spoke to an acquaintance who is thinking of moving to Costa Rica - she mentioned several advantages to the country. Did you move permanently?
Keith, welcome to Dave's. I traded once with someone from Costa Rica, got a passion flower (when I was still in the states).
I hope to see your posts and photos of the things that you are growing. Sounds great to have 12 hour days year round. I would love it. How hot does it get?
again, welcome to the worlds greatest garden community!!
Welcome, nice to have you here
Welcome Keith. It's always great to meet new members. Hope you will continue to enjoy your time in the garden.
Welcome Keith,
Living in one of my fave countries. So many orchids/orchid farms etc etc . I used to go to Rara Avis a lot. No charters to CR any more sniff- so have to go thrugh Miami.
Inanda in cold Manitoba, used to be in Little Britain, Ont, not too far from Orillia.
keith - welcome and hello from the hudson valley in upstate new york. what made to move to costa rica?
Hi Keith, what kind of property do you have in San Pedro de Poas? What a radical change, good for you!
We spent February there last year, back-packing and bussing mostly in the central and west coasts, in some hard-to-reach areas. Did get up to the Volcano Poas...hit it on a clear day, amazing. What are you doing there--are you retired?
Inanda--that's cool, we were at Rara Avis also. Saw a tapir every morning, lots of coatmundis. Orchids weren't in bloom, sob. Saw just one. That tractor ride up that impossible road! We had the place to ourselves for 5 days and it was terrific.
By the way, last year a friend caught a charter out of Alberta to Liberia and evidently that is THE preferred fly-in city. We didn't know about it and did the looong, multi-planed trip to San Jose.
Welcome to DG from TX.
Patti
Glad you joined this site Keith. Costa Rica is one amazing place. Hope to see you here often.

Hi Keith, we're glad you took the plunge into the Welcome Mat! I've heard lots of good things about Costa Rica - infrastructure, health care, and of course, climate and flora. Hope to see lots of neat pictures of the plants you can grow down there. And if you ever have a hankering for some good ol' Canadian snow, or at least pictures of it, just let me know...lol Good to have you with us.
