Hello and Happy New Year to you all

This looks like an active website and I'm looking forward to finding my way around. I have a very short cold growing season, in a very remote area, but my masochistic enthusiasm is endless! And watch out for me doing some pet bragging, too. Here is my clever amaryllis that bloomed in time for Christmas...that's my greenhouse underneath all the snow.

Welcome Chilko - let me guess, do you get zone envy? I can't think of any other folks here in ZONE 2!!!! I am sure there are some - but, I can't think of any off-hand.

So, how short is the season? How far north is Precipice Valley?

Hi and welcome to Daves. Boy, that picture really makes me feel cold. We are to get freezing rain tonight. Think I'd rather have the snow though. Hope you are enjoying the garden. It's a great place to spend those cold winter days and nights.

Hi, Chilo. Welcome to DG! Ooooh...pet bragging....hasten to the Pet forum, you'll find lots of willing eyes & ears!

Shirley, I hear ya....the freezing rain is a real challenge, isn't it... how I miss that kind of dry, powdery snow that you can just sweep off the sidewalk with your broom. Probably just the kind that's in Chilko's beautiful pic, in fact.

Oh well.....Happy New Year to all!

Thanks for all the welcomes! How short is the season? Well, we've never had frost in the last two weeks of July. I use a lot of agricultural fleece, have a greenhouse and an outside plastic house. Grow most of my flowers in containers on the decks, where I can cover them quickly on clear nights. Can't grow goodies like beans, corn. Grow tomatoes, squashes, peppers, herbs in the greenhouse. I don't bother with sensitive annuals like impatiens or begonias, and push the window with many others. Am already starting some seeds--the plants have to be pretty big when I set them out.

We're not all that far north--about 52 degrees--but are in the mountains and at 3,000'. It's not so much the short season as the chilly nights that get us. I envy people in the Yukon! Things there have to grow fast, but boy do they grow.

Here's a summer shot to warm you up, of our back deck:

Your back deck looks beautiful and lush! You are clearly very successful at ekeing out lots of blooms, cold nights or no. Great pic!

WELCOME Chilko, you have found the worlds best gardening community. I too havent met anyone in zone 2, it must be hard....but if you have a greenhouse that would be great!
