New Subscriber from New Brunswick - CAN

Fredericton, NB(Zone 5a)

Hello everyone! I'm a new subscriber from Fredericton, New Brucnwick CAN - my name is Joanne. I've been waundering around the garden path's on this site for the last couple of days, and WOW it's going to be soooo much fun here.

I have several perennial gardens on my property and have been trying my hand at this for about 10 years (last 5 at this location). Some gardens here are new, some old, some for holding, some forgotten or neglected and some just because something's growing there.

I have a little full sun and some partial sun, but have many very mature trees and therefore tons of shade and also woodland area. Oh yeah, as a bonus the house also has a greenhouse attached (not year 'round though). Many of the plants and gardens were here when I arrived, so althought I have identified some of the plants, some are still a mystery.

Thanks for the site and I'm sure we'll be talkin' again real soon.
Joanne

Hi Joanne,

Your garden picture is so pretty and something I'd love to be able to look at in my yard right now. LOL! Fat chance. Welcome to Daves. I'm glad you have taken a look around the site. You are right......it will be fun. Daves Garden becomes a big addiction, so be careful. Soon you find the morning chores have to wait a little longer each day. Then at night, you just have to check in on the latest posts before you go to bed. Of course, during the day, there are slack times at home, so why not go check out Daves. Pretty soon, you will find that you have to make time for the things at home instead of making time for Daves. I love it here, can you tell? I will be anxious to see some more pictures of your place throughout the forums. Have a great time here and hopefully we will meet again soon.

Shirley

Joanne your garden looks lovely. You sound like my kind of gardener. Welcome and I hope you will enjoy the many hours you will spend here.

Hi Joanne - great photo! It's a real treat to see that beautiful shot today...beats looking out the window at our ice pellet storm :-)

Shirley put it very well...DG can be addictive. Soon you'll wonder what you did before you found it!
If you have pets be sure to stop by the Pets forum too...we never tire of seeing pet pictures and hearing pet stories. See you around the garden,

Shannon

OK,
This is the 3rd attempt to send this. Lost it twice so the email has changed substantially.

What does "lol", "LOL", "lololo" mean? I've tried, but it's driving me CRAZT (see).

Plus - I'm working on journling and have searched for a forum to post quesitons but cannot seem to find an approriate one, any suggestions? Maybe just in "general"?

And Shannon here's a picture to take some of those rain pellets away and bring the sunshine and it's warmth a little closer.

Joanne, LOL means laughing out loud. B4N means bye for now. There are tons of shortcuts, but LOL is the one you will probably see most here. You can use Daves Garden forum to ask your journal questions. I don't know of another, but there could be one.

Fredericton, NB(Zone 5a)

Thanks Burgie, I was really gettin' curious.

JoSnoop, the picture of your kitchen garden is a joy to see. Thanks for posting it, and welcome to the site. I especially liked the shot because it indicates some general layout of that corner of your garden. Design is maybe not what we discuss best here at DG, and I encourage us all to post design ideas and solutions like JoSnoop's photo. I find that garden design questions are what I ponder most, then I spend most of my time preparing dirt so the design (like my newest bed by a formerly blank wall) has some hope of success. I'm making gradual progress on my garden in Nashville and recently got my first digital camera. Maybe this coming spring I'll have something worth posting here. I'm not as fortunate as you JoSnoop and inhereited only some ruined bones of a garden at my 1935 house. I know that an avid lady gardener (I'm a man) had the place in the late thirties. She put in an allee of white peonies (I know, that's exotic to New Brunswick) that are still going strong, a dogwood tree that is 25 feet tall, and a redbud tree (a species that is our fondest harbinger of spring in Tennessee) that is so ancient (by redbud standards) it scarcely blooms now. Still, I hate the idea of cutting it, so I'm thinking of training a TALL climbing rose into it. The red bud tree is also about 25 feet tall. Anyone have any ideas on that front? I'm zone 6B.

drl1320 keep up the good work. My gardens - designed!! Thank youuuuu. I've been tossing stuff in for years, then taking it out, or moving it. Putting flowers that like sun in the shade then wondering why they don't grow; putting tall in front of short, then getting frustrated that I have to move things the next season. I thought it was only me, but I suppose there are others like me out there. I have a feeling I'll be looking at my gardens a little differently next season.

Here is a pic of my white Peony just coming into full bloom July01/04.
What about a Wisteria to climb the Redbud tree?

Whoa! I stand molto corrected on the subject of the performance of peonies in New Brunswick. Duh, David (me). I reversed North and South. It's the coastal US where peonies mainly don't do because of the climate, but of course they thrive wherever they have a true winter to take a rest. I bet the blooms last wonderfully in the maritime provinces because of the mild summer hights. The peonies bloom in early May here, and I've planted red varieties, which, unlike the white, just melted in early spring heat. It's interesting you should suggest a wisteria to grow into my old red bud tree, because I just sold a property where my pride and joy was a wisteria vine that I trained across the width of its bungalow porch front. Sitting on my desk in front of me this minute is a copy of "The Irresistible Wisteria" by David Rigby, Fine Gardening, August 1994. I copied it (let's not tell FG) to send to the new owner, who asked for pruning tips. I attached a note of warning, however, that the author lives in Seattle and his idea of wisteria growth speed ("wisteria should be pruned every few months") is clearly based on his experience in cool Seattle. I found that my wisteria needed pruning every four weeks here in Tennessee because it LOVES the heat and hot nights and sends out five foot shoots in that time. It's so vigorous here, that it really should only be planted where every inch of the vine can easily be reached for routine cutting, and no shoot can jump from an out of reach spot into a tall tree. I do love the effect of a neatly pruned wisteria, however. (Unfortunately, the japanese beetles ove its foliage, too, but it keeps growing ahead of their munching.) David

I simply love Wisteria. My sister gave me several seeds about 5 years ago, before I even knew what wisteria was. She lives in St. Catherines Ontario and her zone is 7A (I think). Well, I started the seeds in my greenhouse, then transplanted them outside - in the shade. I left them there for 2 years, and nothing much happened, they grew to a great 5 inches, and I had a hard time finding them in the grass. I transplanted them again the year before last and this year, voila! at end of season, in full sun was my Wisteria, 3 roots about 5 feet, intertwining in a small trellis. I am extremely proud of it, although I'm not sure if it will overwinter. We'll see. Not much since posting a picture of mine, but I would love to see a picture of your porch wisteria. So how about it, is it gonna be wisteria for the redbud??

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Hello JoSnoop, welcome to DG. As you can see, folks are friendly here and we have a lot of fun too.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Welcome Joanne, from chilly Manitoba. Your garden looks just lovely and well organized - unlike mine. Your wisteria should be OK in 5a. I had one in Ont. 4b. Didn't grow at all fast though.

Note to drl1320. Why not grow a clematis along with a rose up your red bud tree. Think that would look cool.

Joanne and Ginny, what variety/cultivar of wisteria did you guys have? I'm in the process of choosing one...I'd like to go with a variety native to N. America, but they don't seem to bloom as prolifically, from what I can tell. Anyway, if you have a sec, I'd be most interested in any personal recommendations, either pro or con :-)

Fredericton, NB(Zone 5a)

Shannon,
If my grows here this year, I would recommend it. I wouldn' t have seeds, but I could get some from my sister in St. Catherine's. Her Wisteria is georgous, but she has it as a standard not a vine. I will try find out what variety it is, althought I do know that it blooms beautifully each year.

Gorgeous, Joanne - thanks for the pic & the suggestion about seeds fm your sis (assuming she would be willing! :-). I had in mind some purple or blue blooms, but now that I see the white it looks very nice too. I'll be curious to see how you make out with yours this year!

Welcome to the Garden! We have at least one other NB member. You can look in the memberlists.

Love your kitchen garden!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

You're right, Darius - I just checked the list too. We now have 14 NB mbrs including 3 subscribers, with Jo! Hope you all got through the latest storm in one piece.

Jo, mauve would be lovely. If your sis is in fact willing to share seeds at any point now or later down the road, I'd be more than happy to trade of course - would just need to know what she would like. Drop me an e-mail anytime. Thanks again!

Burgie,
You're right - I can see this becoming very addictive.
Thanks for the link - I've found some fellow NB'ers.

Shannon, you're an angel. How do you do the "hyperlink" thing -it's great -I'de love to use it.

Yea you guys... we new comers new Journal-ism 101.

How about it?

Is there anyway to learn the EZ way? I tried and ended up real frustrated...

by the way ... HI JOANNE,... my names Abby and I'm a new sprout too. I have some friends here already that are helping me out, so don't hesitate to contact me...If I don't know it, I'll make something up LOL. No really, maybe we can learn some stuff together. Sugarweed has been helping me out and has shown me about the Garden Watchdog... ^up top on your screen...you wouldn't believe how many nurseries there are out there... but as Sidney has shown me .. always look at the negative and possitive comments... you can save yourself a lot of heartache.

Welcome and as so many above me have said "Happy Addiction"!!

Abby

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi, Abby! :-)
Joanne, thanks for that great picture....especially nice in the middle of a cold, grey January day in Ottawa. To put a hyperlink in your post, all you have to do is copy & past the web address (URL) in there...then when your post shows up it will automatically be a hyperlink.

BTW, there's also a "test" forum if you want to practice anything - posting pics, or whatever - & just see how it would look :

http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/test/

I used it quite a bit when we first got our digital camera. Most of my pictures were sideways & I had to figure out how to get them turned around!

Or, you can just practice on us :-)
