Here it is, right after Christmas, and I am sitting here New Years Eve reading posts complaining about people asking for seeds without trading material, or sometimes even asking for the postage too!!

Well, of all the nerve!! But guess what!! A few of the people who are complaining the loudest are people I have traded with and had to keep reminding them that they had not sent their end of the trade.

Hope you all had a nice Christmas and have a Happy New Year.

I usually stay out of stuff like this but thats not what they are complaining about really
The problem is the WAY we were mass mailed asking for free seeds,(oh my,we were seed spamed!)from someone who does not even come here and contribute
That guy didn't even take the time to say
I would like some of your Zinnia seeds
He just asked for seeds for free cause he's broke
Well so is everyone else
and who knows how many people he sent the letter to
and he didn't take the time to even look at the trade lists really cause I got the email and I don't HAVE any seeds on my trade list
Now if you haven't received seeds from someone thats a different story
but we're talking about 2 different issues

And its New Years.........not a good way to start off the new year
Hope you get your seeds but if not
Life's too short
Have a great Holiday and a great growing season

Right about now I'm thinking that if I need any seeds this year, I'll just buy them. Seems like it would be alot less of a hassle than dealing with the constant drama that seems to be so prevalent in this forum lately. :-/

You have the right idea of staying out of the heat, In da shade! LOL
There are so many cool things offered in seed catalogs this year that I just have to try. I like the unusual stuff even if it has been around forever, it is new to me.

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Nette, most people on DG love to share seeds and alot of them wont even ask for postage sometimes. But- there are some people that take advantage of that kindness and hit alot of people up for freebies. I think it was good that thread was started- it probably nipped a potential problem in the bud.

Dangles seeds in front of Inda... free seeeeeeedssssss......

Oh wait that's right, you're gonna buy some. Muhahhahaha.
Happy new year guys!

"pockets the seeds"

LOL, Crimson- You're going to have to use better bait than the word "free" to reel me in!

Sometimes things given as free are anything but.

I have not been involved with Dave's Garden that long so perhaps I am mis-understanding the problem, but in seed trading do not most folks with seeds or trades specify for sase or trade? I am just starting in seeds and I have responded often to Seeds for a SASE as it has been a tremendous help to me , from folks willing to share. It is sad to think that someone offering to trade accept the trade without recipricating. Perhaps there should be a complaint section, so the non-compliers can be tracked.
These forums I thought were for shrang plants, knowledge and friendship. Discord is so un-nessesary. Lets start the New Year right. Carol

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

Carol, I too have responded to many SASE threads because I simply don't have the stock to do trades. This thread is about a certain person who is asking for seeds without having to send any compensation whatsoever. All WZ was doing was alerting members to a potential problem.

Edited to say that this person has emailed dozens of people asking for free seeds. This person has a new house, computer and internet. Surely they could afford a few dollars here and there? I think this person has made a turn for the better though. Please read the thread in it's entirety. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/475740/

I personally will not stop responding to SASE threads if I see something that I want. I will also be very happy to respond to people asking for my seeds for SASE. I've got more than enough of the few varieties that I do have. About 99.9% of the population in DG would give freely to any fellow gardener. But some of us just can't afford to send without being compensated for postage. I can afford some, but that person's attitude was more than I could handle. It was basically........."I need seeds, here's my address".

everyone on daves has the free option to trade with whomever they wish.
Many times traders offer sase, others offer trade only. Some times it is easy, finances allowed to simply offer seeds and drop them in the mail, not asking postage.

There are many different people, personalities, locations and factors s.a young, old, students, disabled, people on fixed incomes , new familes with new small children...........and yes.... those that sometimes are having a hard time........
Trading along with all of the other needs, s.a. envelopes, labels, bubble pack , stickers to make envelopes look CUTE.....

Yes, this can be a very costly passion.

We can even take this a step further to lost postage, not followed thru trades by some traders... lost, I will say........to be gentle...round robins with large quanities of seeds from many traders.....that seem to dissappear along with the member.....

I have been lucky to have met some special people, donated, traded, recieved and given seeds to many Daves members, some at my cost, some at their cost....

I do think though that posting names of poor traders is not appropriate, just for
the sake of sometimes not knowing the whole story and that the word blacklist is rather strong. Not to mention painful to the person whos name is being passed around, sometimes in error. I was at one time being harassed by someone to the point of needing to go to the police. Remember we are on the internet where anything can happen.

Keep track of your good traders, bad traders......and remember that is a hobby.
. I try to remind myself that most people have the best of interests in hand.

Those that dont.....

.Life has many more serious issues to ponder over and beautiful experiences to enjoy ,or atleast mine does.

I love the responses I got. It appears that people are starting to think about other people and their problems. To show a little compassion.

We do not know, nor do we need to know, a persons entire life to decide whether or not to send them a packet of seeds and spend a buck for a bubble envelope and stamps. It is our option to respond or not.

I think Sheran said it best. Each of us can respond as we see fit. Smearing someone's name??? I don't think so.

Perhaps I would feel differently if I had gotten one of this person's emails. Don't know.

Have a good new year everybody. Jeanette

I LOVE trading! DG has been very good to me. When I started I had very little; or so I thought! It didn't take long to realize that if you have ANYTHING, someone wants it!
I have always offered postage at the very least. Now I'm "fat" and have lots of seed to trade or give away. I try to be as generous to everyone as a few very sprecial people have been to me, and even make special packages to people who seem to be new and would like what I have.

Let's remember the spirit of giving and remember that what people dish out comes back to them tenfold...I'd so much rather be expecting the "good stuff'!

Bless you all and have a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year! Oh, yes - and let's share some photos of the babies that have come from trades! Can't wait to see them!!!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I was not suggesting a published list, I thought some way it could be tracked by DG, a place where folks could make someone responsibe aware without posting their names. publicly on a thread.I realize that probably is not possible, it was only a suggestion. Personally I have had great luck with trades and met many fine folks. Sorry for any mis-understanding. Carol

I sure had to laugh over Sequee's " It didn't take long to realize that if you have ANYTHING, someone wants it!"

Isn't that the truth! When I just started out I didn't think I had anything that anyone could possibly want. But a person kept at me until I listed about a dozen or so seeds I had. This person proceeded to tell me about half of them that she would like to have and agreed to send me 2 plants for them.

Well, being a newbie and wanting to create a good image I immediately sent half of my "trading stock." I never heard from her again. When I waited several weeks and emailed her, she again promised to immediately send them. and on, and on, and on. . . . . . . . .

Bummer...I have been very lucky. A few bad experiences, but I'm pretty sure most of them were honest mistakes. Twice I did SASE and nothing ever showed up. Since I didn't "trade" anything I felt uncomfortable and didn't say anything. Then as time went by, I realized it was probably an oversight, but so much time had gone by that I just let it slide.

I'm sure you'll recoup your losses and have an overflow in no time! Let me know if I can help!!!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks Sequee,

It's funny, I had 3 such happenings right when I was a newbie. I have often wondered if there are some that have a way of knowing when a person is new and take advantage of them.

But you know what? I probably would be taken today just as easily.

Me, too! And that's a GOOD THING! I'd rather be a fun loving sucker than too bitter to enjoy the trade game.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

These people love to share! Most, I won't say all b/c I don't know all of them. But people like to be treated nicely and not be taken advantage of. That was the main issue there.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I agree, Usually Garden lovers are pretty nice folks. I have met some great ones on Dave's. I don't have alot to trade , so i feel trully Blessed when I can get seeds from some very kind and generous person. God Bless, Carol
