The first newbie member to post here can have a whole pod of Butterfly X ? seeds that I just picked today. I'm pretty sure the cross will be with another pink brug, but I can't be positive. If you then want to share some of the seeds, that will be up to you. I just want to send to one person right now. Newbie = one year or less. LOL! I have now idea what the time would be, I'm just saying this. I will email the first poster that qualifies.
Shirley
One newbie can have seeds.........
Shirley...a year or less...I think I would qualify?? I do know it has been less than a year that I know what a brug is...or have ever seen one.
Margie
Margie, you have mail.
always a day late and a dollar short lol
...4ever....I am willing to share, if brugie is willing to split it between the two of us!
Or I will send you some of her, once she arrives here!
What you say, Shirley??? Depending what Shirley says, send me or her your address please.
Happy New Year !
Margie
BTW...my DH is from Floral Park & many of his relatives lived in New Hyde Park! He was just in the neighborhood for his 50th re-union from Sewanaka HS !!!
Gosh Margie, you are going to have more bruglings than I do! LOL It must be the California water that makes us so nuts!
Kell...I know, and I am drinking bottled water...maybe it is something else out here??!!
As I am saying to my self, you don't need anymore seeds, I am typing in my info. on the thread!!
Do you remember when I first came to brugs this spring/summer...I wanted to know the best 4 to get because that is all I had room for??? So much for that !!!!
Margie, you certainly can share if you wish. I just want to get them mailed to you next week and you can take it from there. There are between 90 and 100 seeds in the pod.
90-100 !!! OH MY !!!! Yes, I think I will share big time....
After I get them I will start a post!!!
....4ever....please send me your address!!
Picturelady, you are so kind. I have some seeds from Brugie that I won in the contest. I just got them started. Your husband was in the same school district as me. I also went to Sewanaka for about 6 months for beauty culture, didn't work out to well lol.
Welcome to Daves, luckpup. It's always great to have another brug lover here on the brug forum. Do you have any brugs now?
Shirley
oh shoot Brugie, I missed out
lucky pup...welcome to the real world of brugs and DG!!! I am sure I will have plenty to share, so please send me your real name and address...
kareoke...please send me your info. too...I cannot imagine needing 90-100 seeds!
Once I get the pod and seeds, I will see how many more I can share....please remember to keep track of the hybridizer of the seeds! Just incase you get a real winner!!!
I do have a question for the hybridizers among us...is it OK as a general principal to share with others what we recieve? or do we need to ask permission of the hybridizer. Is it a need or a courtesy? Can you see I am new?!
Thank you again...Shirley...You have made a lot of people happy today! Happy New Years to you also!
Margie
If you still have a few to share, I would love to have a few! I can send you SASBE if you like!
I saw this post about 10 minutes after Brugie did it, but even tho I am new to brugs (I have a few stems rooting now, thanks to some wonderful DG people), I looked up my subscriber date and it was a little over a year, so I didn't think I was young enough to answer the post! I guess I buzzed around the Daylily forum so much I didn't take time to look in the other areas of the garden! With the beautiful blooms of the brugs, I don't know how I missed it for so long! Now I am almost hooked...
Thank you so much!
Yvonne
Yvonne...Oh, I thought we had to be new to brugs, not to DG?! Actually daylilies is where I had been also. I guess we need to talk!!! Daylilies was my first obsession & now most recently I love brugs.
Yes, send me your real name and address...
The postage will be on me ( for the other members above that I promised them to, also), as this is really the first time I have something to share by mail! And so, so many members have been willing and able to share with me & did when I needed it!
So, yes....send me your info. and also tell me about your daylily collection!
I guess this is called faith, Shirley...to promise to give away something I don't even have yet!!! :-)))
Margie
Well, I think you were young enough, YTRN. Margie has been a member for more than a year, but I didn't find any posts until about April of '04. Besides, I knew she would share with as many as she could. Margie, just don't cut yourself short. Remember, sometimes some of the seeds can be empty.
About sharing. I think if a hybridizer gives you seeds, you should grow them unless you do ask if they can be shared or they tell you up front that it is okay to share. It would be an individual thing, and at times, could depend on the cross of the seeds they are entrusting you with. For instance..... If I had given you seeds from Day Dreams, I would probably not want them all over the country because it is easy to lose track of them and not ever know what the seed produced. This cross I'm giving you will be a good cross, I just can't be sure of the father, so therefore, even tho good, it isn't as important to me as a cross with both mother and father, known. JMO.
Thank you Shirley...good to know the rules.
I think I will stop taking names for now & see what I have first.
I had newer heard or seen a brug until April '04...so I knew as far as brugs went, I would be under a year!
BTW...that is one thing I just love about the forums...the relationship with the other members & being able to give....it gives me such a good feeling! I am so happy to be part of this group!
Thank you all who have shared with me over the last year! My garden will never be the same! I just love brugs!!!
Photo from yesterday!
Margie, those would just be "MY" rules. Others may see it differently. Good luck with the seeds. They are drying nicely, so I may stick a silicone packet in with them and put them in the mail on Monday.
Thanks all of you for the warm welcome. I have a few Brugs that are not named. A white, pink and a peach. I had the white and pink to bloom for me this last fall but didn't get the peach in time for any blooms. MsCritterkeeper gave me the white and pink last spring. And she has been very helpful in learning more about them. I had a wind fall and received more pink ones and she helped me with the questions I had. Needless to say I'm hooked. I saw a double pink in here yesterday and fell totally in love with it. Somedaaaaaay I'll have one. lol I do have a bunch of cuttings of the white and pink that I salvaged just before the first freeze here. Which was the end of Nov.. I've had them rooting in water. If anyone would like to have some, I'll give them for postage. I'll start a thread for them later. The people on this thread come first. I'm looking forward to trying to start some from seed. Especially some with names or at least the hope of a name. lol
Great gardening to All in2005,
luckpup

Ya'll are SO sweet! I really didn't mean to offend anyone and hope I didn't.
Margie, I would so appreciative of the seeds! However, I don't know how good I will be at germinating them. I will definitely have to get some of that famous Rockwool! lol
So far, I have been terrible x2 at growing daylilies from seed. I have tried, but have not been doing something right. What seems to be right for everyone else hasn't been right for me. And I have bought some crosses that I think would produce a wonderful plant. I couldn't afford the expensive parents, so sometimes I am able to win an auction of a cross involving some of the fancy parents. I do have a bunch of daylilies that I invested in and thought I could grow enough to sell some and recoup my cost, but mostly I have only traded them for other plants....mainly a few brugs! lol
Oops, I deviated from this wonderful forum.
Thanks again for your generosity, Margie and Shirley!
Sending you email Margie! Ya'll please wish me luck!
Yvonne
Let me see...I have the addresses of Denise, Janis, Yvonne and Doris...great! I think that is everyone I promised to share with for now. As soon as I get them and they are dry enough, I will send them out to you. I will post here when I mail them. Please keep all of us up on their progress! or lack of progress!
Actually my rate of sucess with seeds is less than I see kell and gretchen and others post here. I have used RW and I have used soil, first sterilized with boiling water. Then placed them in the moist plastic bag and put under lights & even some with bottom heat. I would say I am running about 50%...not good, but better than nothing!
Once they do take...some of mine from summer are about 3' tall now...no blooms on them yet! So, we are all learning...like Shirley said, with an unknow dad...they are less "important"....so good ones to improve our skills on. I have to get this percentage better before I start other know parent ones! :-))
Good luck!!! Margie
Margie, maybe your seeds are not real fresh. There is nothing wrong with older seeds, they just take longer to germinate. I find fresh ones germinate so very fast. However, I also am growing some from older seeds, I am just more patient with them.
Here are the ones I just did tonight. I have 12 seeds here and I used 4 small cubes of rockwool stuffed into the smallest tupperware like container, it holds 4 ounces. I will now enclose it in damp clear plastic bag.
Here are the 7 seeds I did on 12/16. Today most are 2 inches tall. I will now pot them up in soil. I had 1 not germinate. It probably will. I will stick it on top of one of the germinated ones I pot up tonight from this batch just so I do not have to hold over the rockwool tupperware pot. If more seeds had not germinated, I would just keep them in the tupperware and the plastic bag for awhile longer.
Margie--HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
Kell, you have the magic touch. You just amaze me with your success!
Yvonne
Denise, Janis, Yvonne and Doris...I have your seeds all packaged up and will put them in the mail tomorrow! 1/18...no mail today as holiday!
Please let us know how they do for you & especially if you get any really good ones! And remember, Brugie is the hybrizer.
Enjoy!
Margie
Thank you picturlady, and I will keep you informed.
Margie, it was so nice of you to share the Shirley (Brugie)seeds and so nice of Shirley to offer. I hope you all grow some beauties from them.
Thank you picture lady, I'll let you know when I get them...
Margie, I got my seeds today. Now all I have to do is get the courage up tp start them lol For some reason it kinda scares me. I don't want to fail and I don't want to screw up giving Brugie the right information. Please tell me what all I need to look for to report about them. Any tips on starting them would be appreciated too.
I got these special seeds! Thank you both so very much!
Yvonne
Good luck to all of you with your seeds. No doubt, we will see some pretty pictures later on of these babies.
Congrats. I hope they do really well and that you get some great brugs with color from them. Oh, can't forget...long tendrils are a plus too.
shirley, how can i miss this one?
you are so generous. that is so cool! this site is so full of warm and generous people.
Wish I had more right now, but the next unknowns will be a while before they are ready.
I am new as of yesterday to this forum and to Dave's Garden. I have some brugmansias and some daturas. I am not sure which is which becuase I think the nursery where I purchased them had them labeled incorrectly. I have 2 HUGE peach ones( the blooms are not upright but more so that the yellow or white ones), 1 yellow one( the blooms hang down)and one white one( the blooms hang down). I would love to know how to collect the seeds( i do not even know where the seeds are) and plant them. I have read for 4 hours on the planting of the seeds and now I am really confused. Any tips anyone can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! Happy Gardening.
I have wonderful luck with rooting cuttings from my large plants.
smelltheroses...welcome to DG! Do you have any pods on your brugs? The seeds are in the pod, which develops after the flower finishes, if it is fertilized either by nature or by man. I will give you a link that has alot of good info. on it....or rather do a search on DG and you will find info. on Pods and starting seeds!
Good luck!
Margie
Datura will pollinate themselves so you will find round, spiny pods where each flower has been. However, some types will have bumpy round pods. I noticed that on some of the doubles I had.
Brugmansia don't do that well. Bees can pollinate if you have two different brugs or you can use pollen from one and paint it on the other plant's flower stigmas. The pods will take three months give or take to mature when the weather is warm and longer during cool weather. Most brug seed pods are smooth and elongated. The pods on a couple of species will be round, but you probably don't have those in Florida. They prefer much cooler climates for growing. Those would be Sanguinea and Arborea. If the blooms on your plants last up to 5 days or more, they are brugmansia. Datura blooms generally only last from one afternoon, late, until mid morning or noon the next day. Hope this helps some.
