Snow cone cutting...
I thought Brugs were alergic to "wet feet",but here you show a beautiful plant with a huge root growth in a jar of water. At what point in time does the plant need to be planted in soil ? Being new to the game I've only tried growing from seed,so far.
Beautiful Margie. When are you going to plant them? In your zone I would think that you could plant any time? Or are you going to wait until they bloom as an experiment?
See, now I would think they would need some nutrients???? Yet, I think Monika said she just leaves hers in the water until she can plant outside? Or did I missunderstand?
Jeanette
If the roots start turning brown, I would get it planted in soil. I believe she said that it won't grow the hairy roots that it needs, while in water.
Brugie is right.
also ............ I would not add fert to the water they get enough nutrition when you change the water every few days.
(fert. will grow algae in the jar)
BUT .....................
The plant needs to grow different roots for the soil as these 'water roots' will eventually rot off .
Up here we need to hold them over for the winter in cool water jars .
Alas, I do not have the room for all these potted cuttings over winter , so I do as Monika does.
Just to keeping them alive until the weather permits planting outdoors or potting for the GH..
Sounds like maybe I should be potting these up soon??? I could put them in the GH, which I don't let freeze...but it does get to 40 degrees. No extra lights in there though...would they be OK there? Would they be better than in water with lights indoors? I would appreciate any help!!
Scoot you are so smart! I have been learning all sorts of stuff from you!
Anyway you can pot them in small pots and have them still fit under the lights there Margie? I always pot mine in the smallest pots I can in winter to reduce the chance of root rot. And then once under the lights and in the warm house a few weeks, I bet they will have set enough roots in the dirt to do OK in your cooler GH.
I start my smaller cuttings inside and then move them out to a protected place right next to my house, not even in my hoophouse, and they do fine Margie. I also have started some bigger ones last month in gallon cans and put them out on my open porch to start with. I have no clue if they have even rooted yet, but all are looking just like the day I potted them up.
Ok...I think I will start potting them up...and still keeping under lights for awhile...and then put them out!
Too cute Scoot! I just love pink brug fairies with their pink dust especially at blooming time. LOL
OK...guys...here is what I did! I potted all of my cutting that were in water and had roots ( probably about 30 of them )! I watered them and put on some scanmask to keep the fungus gnats away...and put them in my little GH. Actually it is warmer out there than in the house, and I plan to put the heater on for them for a couple of nights. So hopefully they will all do well...
Here they are immediately after being transplanted....
OMG , Here I thought we were only talking about the one cutting.
Boy, have you ever been busy.
Just imagine how beautiful your yard will look in a few weeks.
Hope you keep us posted.
