I put this in the houseplant forum but maybe I should have asked here ....
I've been looking at one at Lowe's that is currently 69.97. The garden guy says he'll sell it to me for 40.00, that is still alot of money if I kill it..... It is in a large pot and about the size of the one in the plants database. Can this be divided and replanted ? Is it worth 40.00 ... ?
I'd love a second opinion before I spend this amount of money.....
What's a reasonable price for a philodendron xanadu
Oh boy, tough call. The thing about this plant is that it is a slow grower, so if you're looking for dramatic, then I guess that's worth $40. I've seen plants in quart pots selling for under $10, they are little and it will be 3 years before they have that look. I have a couple that i've had about 3 years and they are about 2' x 2'. planted outside, in the shade, inground, I have to definitely cover them VERY WELL in the winter time. The first year I didn't do this and I almost lost one. In your area, you would definitely have to bring inside. Beautiful plant. hope this helps. I notice they are a "no big deal" kinda plant in FL, if you can't find any quart sizes in your area, I bet there might be a mailorder place in FL that might offer small plants and be a reasonable deal. Also, there's always ebay.
Short of it is: Big plant, big bucks; little plant, little bucks...
Thanks vossner...... They can be impressive...... I WILL look for a mailorder in Florida ......... I've been looking on ebay but anything shipped is also costly ...... sometimes by the time you bid and pay shipping the 40.00 looks like a bargain (LOL). I need to take your advice and learn a little patience and buy a 10.00 one ...... it's good to know they are out there ......
Thanks again
One other suggestion; I was looking for a P. xanadu last year and all I could find locally and on line were very expensive, too. I finally tried e-Bay and got a very good sized one (10" pot, full) shipped for around $17.

17.00 sounds pretty good ... I've been checking e-Bay.... I guess I'm such a newbie that I'm not confident enough to spend much money just to kill it......
I went back to Lowe's today and there was a big SOLD sign on it .... : - ( ... someone must have thought it was worth the money .......
Thanks
I went to a local nursery yesterday (which typically is kinda pricey) and saw a pretty large 3 gallon Xanadu for $19.99.
With the weather (ICE) in Kansas don't give me any excuse to head for TEXAS ....... I might just do it .....
I'm keeping an eye out ..... in the mean time I've set up a trade for a start with another very generous DG'er.
