hoyas and dormancy

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Should my hoyas be actively growing right now? I have about 17 varieties and they are all new for me except for my hindu rope. I have overwintered it in my gh the past 2 winters and I know that it usually stops growing once the temps get real cold.
We have had temps down into the low 20's and all of them including the rope are still showing signs of active growth. I even have an onychoides that I got form Mel a few months back that has put on new flower buds and it's just a rooted cutting in a four inch pot.

My experience is that hoyas never go completely dormant...some may slow down a bit. (I am not speaking as a grower in Hawaii). Now with the the days growing longer (Dec. 21-Winter Stolstice) we should start seeing lots of new growth. If the conditions are favorable (as in the way David keeps his hoya environment) they will continue to grow hard all year.

Sounds like you have a very precocious H. onychoides...lucky you!

David,
I agree with Carol. I do find my Hoyas slow down in the winter...even in the greenhouse. To my surprise, my plants have continued to bloom this winter. I have a H. macgillivrayi that is about to pop and several others that are filled with swolen peduncles! My plants and I are both happy that the days are getting longer.
Way to grow on the H. onychoides! You may have a bloom before I do!

My hindu rope has always come to a halt in the winter butit is still growing and has some buds that should be open soon.

Mel,the onychoides has more than doubled in size since I got it and you can destinguish the flower bud from the new growth. If it makes it to a flowering stage i'll try and get a pic to post here.

Arizona hoyas don't realize they're suppose to go dormant:-). My Cembra is about to bloom, the rest are putting out new growth, must be that almost 300 days of sunshine we have.

Blessings,
Awanda

Okay, rub it in you, you, sun drenched people you...... lol.

While I definitely do not have any hoyas willing to present a bloom to me in this unforgiving zone, I did notice that my new little Krinkle 8 is sending out new growth like gangbusters. My hindu rope has not stopped growing, but its really really slow, as are my carnosa, and krimson princess and queen and holliana.

I have a dozen hindu rope babies started in Nov that are as green as can be, but don't have any new growth happening. I have 5 baby NOIDS and a baby Motoskei that are happily but slowly sending out some new growth.

Spring is coming! And so are my flowers!!!

Christine
