My mom has some common ginger (Zingiber officinale) that has sprouted. I would like to try to grow it but I'm not sure how to plant it. Which way is up? :)
Also, it's a pretty big piece of ginger that has a couple of sprouts on it, does anyone know if it's safe to split it up?
Thank you,
Mary Ev.
Common Ginger sprouted
Our experience is that if the tuber has no eyes...just lay it on the ground and the eyes will go UP. Cover with a bit of soil, doesn't need much, because, aft er all "it is going to be harvested". Yes, you can split it up. We plant a bed every spring.
Now...I tried ginger in Seattle and it never bloomed...but if you can grow it under lights until the summer it may work. The flowers come up from the tubers and they are green....so when you see those start to come up you harvest the ginger (or all the effort goes into the flowers). The flowers are pretty small - It was a very FAST draining soil ...FAST, like LOTS of Perlite and lots of water.
Good luck!!! :~) Carol
Thank you Carol! I can't wait to see what happens. I'm using a lot of lights this year, so I should be able to find some room under one.
