I am not trading seeds. But got some in the Christmas Ornament Exchange. And I don't know what to do with them. My hopes is somebody can help me. The names are; Chasmanthe aethiopica Iridaceae Permial
and; Perovskia atriplicifolia Russian Sage. That is one part of gardening I have never done. Any help at all ??? Thank-you Binky :(((((
Help
Binky, I did a little research for you.
Chasmanthe aethiopica:
I pulled up a link in the PDB but no pics.
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/76883/index.html
Also pulled it up in Google Images and it looks like you've got some seeds to a beautiful plant. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/76883/index.html
This is the best information I could find on it.

Perovskia atriplicifolia Russian Sage has lots of good info in the PDB. Russian Sage is a wonderful plant to have. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/733/index.html
Do you know who sent them to you? You might be able to get more info on how to plant the first one from them.

Fill a freezer ziplock baggie with 4 cups of this planting medium:
2 cups house of potting soil and 2 cups of sterile potting mix. Mixed well.
Place soil into baggie.
Spray/Mist soil in baggie very well.
Drop seeds on top of the soil. cover very lighty and spray again lightly.
Leave air in baggie and zip closed; place by coldest window where they will be in light, but not direct sunlight right now.
Check on seeds every few days; do not let them dry out. Tap moisture condensation down into bag.
When they sprout:
Make sure to open top of baggie a little bit.
Now here's a kicker:
Make jello Formula! Huh? Yes...!
Make any flavor of jello .. mabe one you don't like.
It must be sugar based ... Not Diatetic!
Add 2 addtional cups of water to the entire recipe.
Keep some in fridge (lalbel well... ('SEEDLING FOOD')
Put some in spray/mist bottle. Keep in a not so cold spot to spray them when they need water.
Remember to open baggie up so they can breathe!
Many other seedlings will love it too.
It prevents: Mold, Mildew, and Damping Off at the same time.

The Russian Sage:
Plant the little furry things like you would any other seed.
It's so hard to handle the tiny little tear-drop shaped seeds.
There is only one seed in each of the furry things, I found out by trying to get them out it my self.
I planted 7 last week; myself (a very fancy way: an cardboard eggcarton, as usually on top of the fridge.)
Pretty hard to do when you have neuropathy _and_ arthritis!
I hope these things can help you.
It takes me a while to type things out these days.
Everything looks like I type in shorthand lately.. can't hit the keys right anymore.
You should see me now... trying to correct alll of my bad spelling mistakes! LOL!
Have fun, got more questions? Just email me through DG.

Just got smart and did an edit so I can copy and paste it to my notepad for future use!

Wow! What great info! What else do you use your jello concoction on?
Cherishlife,Thanks a lot for helping me out. bookmark the pages you found.
Robin, Didn't expect you on line already. Are you back home? The jello surprised me. Never heard of it. Do you think it would work on Hoya cuttings? Do you think I can put these seeds in pots? Is its to soon to start these? I will have to put them outside once they start to spout. And we still will have some temp. down to 30's. I am still unsure of myself as I have never started from seeds. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks again, Mary
Actually Binky, I called my b/f; he read the planting date over the phone to me. I started the Russian sage seeds on the 20th; he says 2 of them are already sprouted and are 1/4 inch already!
I guess they really like my choice of soil. I told him to water them from the bottom.

Sequee,
I'm gonna try some beans first; inside of my clear pyrex custard cups.
I've had too many problems using that agar-agar; it somehow always winds up too hard.
I'm also gonna try some passion-fruit seeds and some special gloxinia seeds too.
For those, I think I'll only put in 1 extra cup of water, instead of 2.
Most bean type seeds I start in a quart glass jar, with oaktag lined in the inside. I then tuck the beans between the glass jar and the oaktag a little more than 1/2 way down inside; put water in the bottom and check everyday; transplant when needed.
OK?
