Snow on Palms

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I had to post this to match Lisa's ice pic! First time in a hundred years! We had 2 inches and it was 26*F at 4:30 am. This pic was taken at 7:00 am.

Susie I thought you moved from TN down to TX to get away from all of that mess!!!!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I did! It followed me.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Susie, Wow, that is hard to believe! I hope that your plants don't suffer too much from the cold and snow. While it's cold here in Knoxville, we haven't seen snow yet. I'm not going to be too smug about it though, as I am predicting that we get slammed this winter with snow.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Believe it or not, most came thru with minimal damage. Some of the bananas have brown leaves but the mid ribs are still green, the trunks are all okay. The Basjoo banana still has green leaves. The Abyssinian looks like it might be a goner, it's leaves are mush. Of course the coleus are mush, but the hibiscus only have burned leaves. The citrus is all fine. The leaves on the ears that didn't get covered are mush, but the lower stems seem okay, time will tell with them. The leaves on the brugs are wilted, but the stems seem firm. It got into the 50's today!

I'm crying for you Susie
So sad......

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

wow suz, yall got more than we did!

hope our palms pull through this!

Suzie, I could not believe what I was hearing when I heard about your white Christmas, then I found out I got one too. Just not as white. There is still some snow around the woods and trees. I guess the elephant ears won't be back, and the abysinnian banana probably won't come back either, but what about gingers? Do they like snow and ice?

Mc Call Creek, MS

Hey Roz, don't cry. I THINK it will all come back. If your gingers are hedychiums, I know they will. I'm pretty sure that as long as the ground itself did not freeze most everything will make out fine. I don't know anything about the banana, but pretty sure about the ee and most of the gingers.

Susie, I'm so glad yours made out okay. I really thought about you when I heard that weather report on Brownsville.

And here I sit in Iowa and it was nice, not real warm, but it is getting there. We didn't have a flake of snow. I think it is supposed to be the other way around. Hoping you guys don't lose much, if anything. It's pretty, isn't it?

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Roz,
I think the bananas and gingers will be ok. I was worried about my queen palms, I forgot to wrap them, but they are as green as can be. White Christmas on the Gulf Coast, who would've guessed it.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Roz, the ears will be fine. Is the pseudostem(trunk) still firm on the Abyssinian banana? Mine lost it's leaves, but the growth point and the pseudostem are still okay. We got to 26, how cold did you get?

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Oh my gosh! I can't believe that you got snow Susie! That just stinks... Your always such a great sport. I'd be crying. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that everything comes back quickly.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hey Susie- I wonder if the cold made the gators go to the big pond in the sky? Or maybe they swam away to a warmer climate? Have you seen them lately?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Didn't hurt the gators, when it starts getting cool they head to the bottom of the resacas and ponds. They go sort of dormant I guess, but when it warms up in the spring they will be back. Good thing they're not out, my silly pup ran into the resaca after a flock of whistling ducks. Of course he couldn't catch them, they would just fly out a little farther each time he'd get close.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Well thank goodness for the cold weather then. I'd hate to think if they were out and your pup went in there. Darn gators. Too bad they don't move on. Or visit that pond in the sky LOL..

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I keep hoping they will turn into a pair of boots or a nice belt, but no such luck!

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

How many do you have out there? What does one do when the gators become a problem? If you can't make them into boots or a belt- how about a purse? Lots of purses!!! You can sell them on ebay. LOL I tell you, the thought of gators in my yard would put me over the deep end. I'd be so scared my dumb animals would fall prey to one of them. Heck, I could see my dog Molly trying to scare one away. All 12lbs of her.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kristi, we saw two in the resaca close to our yard. Our main yard is fenced, so the dogs can't go down there, but I had the gate open to get the lawn tractor thru(pulling a wagon to haul off the frozen stuff I'd cut off) and Bleu ran out the gate and straight into the water.
If the gators start coming up on our property(they mostly stay in the water), we call the wildlife services dept and they come and "try" to catch and relocate the gators.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Suzie, we got down to 24, and the bad thing is that it stayed in the low 30's for awhile. The pedistem or I guess you must mean the big stalk is still firm on the abyssiannian, and I know the other nanas will be back. Janet, I hope you did not get any snow damage. Gaylams, Hope you did not get damage either. Sure is good to hear the good news about the ees and gingers. Brugie, it did not snow enough to get a pretty white look very long here, though I still had some snow around the edges of the woods by my house. It was mostly hail and sleet, but we did have some big flurries.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Our normal highs right now should be 30 degrees and falling. I'm not complaining. This kind of weather is wonderful. Especially on the heat bill. I know one day we will be blasted with snow and winds though.
