what is the plant it is feeding on?? That will help with IDing it. Not many books for cat ID and not many pics in the ones you can find. There is lots of info on what the larva eat. New one coming out next year that is supposed to be really good with lots of pics

closest thing I could find is Variegated fritillary but book only shows side view. Can you gt a view of it from the side. I can't tell in the book pic for sure since it is not showing all the black on the top as in your pic

This caterpillar is probably some kind of checkerspot.

I do not know much about Western US butterflies and their cats.

I hope this points you in the right direction. I believe it is perhaps the Northen Checkerspot.
